The archaeological site of L'Alt de Benimaquia dates from the Archaic and fully developed Iberian periods and lies on the north-western edge of Montgó. The settlement of L'Alt de Benimaquia was fortified by a 100-metre-long wall with six attached towers. A wine-production facility and indigenous amphorae imitating contemporary Phoenician types were identified at L'Alt de Benimaquia.
The Església de Sant Mateu is part of the area’s architectural history and is regarded as La Xara’s first public construction. Construction began in 1877 and was completed in 1881. The church has a rectangular floor plan, three naves and round arches made of tuff stone blocks. El rentador is a single-nave municipal building crossed lengthwise by an irrigation channel and is now integrated into a residential complex with pedestrian streets.
The church complex of La Iglesia was completed in 1902 with the construction of the rectory. La Escuela was built in 1963 on a plot acquired by the residents.
Landscape and townscape
Benimaquia Mountain lies on the western flank of the Montgó massif. The Barranco del Regatxo, also known as Morxama, crosses the area of La Xara. J. B. Basset Park is distinguished by its garden design and native flora. On Plaça del Garrofer stands a carob tree that is 8.5 metres tall and estimated to be 300 to 400 years old.
Between the town and the mountain lies a railway station in La Xara, now served by the TRAM.
Route and patron saint festivities
The Ruta dels Riuraus I is a three-kilometre circular route of low difficulty with an elevation difference of 13 metres that passes through La Xara. On the Ruta dels Riuraus I, you can see the Riurau de Pinella with its carved pillars.
La Xara’s patron saint festivities in honour of San Roque and San Mateo begin on the first weekend of September. The ten-day patron saint festivities include bull events in the street, the use of gunpowder, communal dinners and musical performances.
