History

La Carroja was first mentioned in a document in 1369. It appears in the Llibre de la col·lecta del morabatí de les valls de Gallinera i Ebo. The history of the village also includes the church of Sant Francesc de Borja: it was founded on 16 December 1682 under the patronage of Saint Francis Borgia. These two dates open up different chronological perspectives on the history of the village, which you can consider separately when exploring it.

Culture

The architectural form of the church of Sant Francesc de Borja includes a bell tower standing at the base of the church building. The tower is covered with a tiled roof and topped with a weather vane. Its location, roof and finial are clearly distinguishable details of the church's architecture that can be observed independently of its foundation date.

The street layout also has several facets. The section of the Ruta dels 8 pobles through La Carroja consists of what is roughly a cluster of houses around a single street. At the same time, the streetscape features very narrow sections and broad squares. For an imaginary walk, you can consider the linear arrangement of the houses alongside the alternation between constricted and open spaces.

Nature and Routes

La Carroja lies at the foot of the Penya Foradada. The Foradada can be reached from La Carroja. The Ruta dels 8 pobles passes through La Carroja and includes the Font de Baix there. Another route begins in the village: the route to the Corrales de La Carroja starts in La Carroja and leads to the three Corrales de La Carroja.

This route offers an excellent example of the former livestock-farming architecture of the area: the mountain enclosures. The Cañada de La Carroja is a route intended for driving herds to pasture. For personal planning, the route destinations can be understood according to their different themes: a spring, a mountain destination, a historic architectural form and traditional pasture use stand as distinct focal points alongside one another.
