L'Alguenya – Holiday apartments, cave houses and routes

L'Alguenya combines the Sierra de Algayat, historic cave houses, local specialities and routes through diverse landscapes. The route to Algayat leads through the Sierra de Algayat, which is also called Peña Gorda. Diverse flora and fauna as well as steep rock faces characterise the route; climbing and rappelling are possible on the rocks. This places nature observation and rock activities directly alongside each other.

Culture and history

The Museo Etnográfico Municipal de Algueña opened to the public after a cave house was restored. The restored cave house dates from 1886. The cave houses in Algueña were used as permanent homes for many years and were the origin of the municipality of Algueña. The museum, year of construction and former use provide three different approaches to the history of the town.

Nature

Another landscape is revealed by the route to the Barranco del Aire. It passes through an area with numerous caves and offers panoramic views from the summit. Compared with the Algayat route, the caves and views from the summit take centre stage here, while flora and fauna as well as steep rock faces define the character of the other route. The two paths therefore differ in the landscape features and activity-related aspects described.

Local specialities

In Algueña, there is a wide selection of fresh and cured sausages as well as handmade confectionery and pastries. The specialities mentioned include Perusas, Almendrados, Sequillos, Pastizos, Toñas and Aguardiente rolls. The selection therefore includes both savoury sausage products and various sweet and baked goods.

Festivals

Algueña's patron saint festivals take place in the last week of July in honour of Saints Abdón and Senén. Their feast day is 30 July. As the opening event of the patron saint festivals, the Trofeo de Velocidad de Algueña has been held continuously on the first Sunday in July since 1991. For one day, the streets of Algueña are transformed into a racetrack. The event attracts thousands of visitors and motorsport fans. The calendar therefore includes a fixed date in July, the first Sunday of the month and the last week of July as separate time references.

Getting there and cycling route

The CV-840 is the road connection for travelling to Algueña by car. When arriving by train, the routes lead via the railway stations in Alicante, Novelda or Elda. The Ruta La Solana cycling route leads from its starting point through the streets of the town centre and along the paved path by the sports centre towards the district of La Solana. Its route therefore connects the town centre, sports centre and La Solana in this order.
