In Jacarilla, the Casa-Palacio del Marqués de Fontalba is considered the last stately building in the comarca. The Palacio del Marqués de Fontalba was built in 1920 and has two storeys, a portico, a balustrade and a tiled façade.

Culture and History

The historic ensemble includes the Jardines del Marqués de Fontalba. Entering through the Puerta de los Leones, visitors come to an avenue of slender palm trees that recreates La Vereda de las Palmeras. The Fontalba Garden also contains sculptures, fountains and a sundial; a pagoda stands beside the pond.

The Fontalba Garden and the pine forest cover 20,000 square metres within a walled complex. Their design is neo-historicist and features neoclassical, Arabic and Renaissance ornaments. At the Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de Belén, the bell tower is located in the centre of the façade; the church also has stained-glass windows.

Jacarilla's townscape therefore brings different forms of expression together: the palace combines its architectural structure with a decorative façade, the garden combines landscaped paths with sculptures and water, and the church completes the ensemble with a bell tower and stained-glass windows.

Trails and Landscape

The Ruta de la Cueva begins in the area of the Casa-Palacio del Marqués de Fontalba in Jacarilla. The Ruta verde Camino de la Cueva is a moderately difficult, well-signposted hiking trail with a total length of 6.6 kilometres. This makes it possible to consider the starting point at the historic building together with the information on the trail type, signage, length and difficulty.

Ruta 1, Tramo Básico, is a circular route through the urban area of Jacarilla. It passes places considered particularly significant or of tourist or cultural interest. Ruta 6, Tramo Básico – Vereda las Palmeras – Camino del Copo, is also a circular route and runs through the recreation area at the meander of the Río Segura.

The three routes therefore differ in their courses: Ruta 1 remains within the urban area, Ruta 6 follows the meander of the Río Segura, and the Ruta verde Camino de la Cueva offers 6.6 kilometres on a moderately difficult hiking trail. These features give day planning in Jacarilla different focal points without presenting the trails as a single, uniform offering.
