Bolulla can be discovered through its paths, history and local dishes. The El barranc del Negre route begins in Bolulla and runs through the Serra de L’Aixorta via the Morro Blanc. After a long ascent along a path and the challenging climb through the Barranc del Negre, it continues to Peña Alta, also known as Cima L’Aixorta. Nature and trails
A differently designed route is the Ruta del Agua de Bolulla. It is 1.5 km each way, takes 30–40 minutes, is easy and follows a linear path. The route begins at the Plaza del Ayuntamiento and descends along a dirt track to the Bolulla River. Along the route lies the Font dels Xorros, also known as Font de la Renyinyosa, a historically significant spring. Narrow footbridges and small bridges lead to a waterfall with a clear natural pool, referred to as a water reservoir. At the end stands the now-ruined old mill of Bolulla, a reminder of the historical importance of water to the valley’s agricultural economy.
The Camí Vell de Bolulla a Tàrbena has paved sections, particularly in the “Ses Voltes” area, where the path follows a zigzag route. This old mule track was historically used to transport goods. The information on distance, duration, route design and ascent makes the two types of trail comparable.
History and festivals
Bolulla originated as a Muslim alquería; a document from the 15th century places it in the Vall de Garx. The church in Bolulla was built in 1732, extended in 1822 and designed in the Baroque style.
In August, the patronal festivals of San José y Virgen de los Dolores take place on the third Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. The Fireta de Santa Lucía takes place on the second weekend in December. It offers local dishes such as puxero de pilotes, bunyols de carabassa and minxos a la paleta, handicrafts, as well as international products such as English and German confectionery.
Local cuisine
Bolulla’s traditional sweet dishes include coca con almendras, suspiros, monas y toñas, pastissos con boniato, almendrados and carquiñoles. Mintxos are prepared by shaping dough into balls, flattening them into circles and cooking them on a griddle, then filling them with Mullador, for example with onions and tomatoes, river prawns and tomatoes, anchovies or sausage.
