The “EL PANTANET – NECRÓPOLIS MAS DEL POU” route is 4.78 km long, has a low level of difficulty and has a stated effective walking time of 1 hour and 30 minutes. It begins at a waterfall in a natural setting. The “ALFAFARA – CABEÇÓ DE MARIOLA” route features explanatory panels about the Iberians, gains more than 500 metres in elevation in around one hour and offers views spanning several dozen kilometres. Nature and landscape
The Serra de Mariola Natural Park partly encompasses the municipality of Alfafara. The Molí Rupestre del Pantanet is located in a cave near the Barranc del Pantanet, next to a small waterfall. It is integrated into the limestone of the ravine and is open to visitors.
Culture
The Cova de les Finestres consists of artificial troglodytic caves built as agricultural storage and utility spaces. There are 12 rock-hewn cavities in total, accessible via a wooden staircase. Most of the cavities inside are interconnected and form chambers on several levels.
The Ermita de la Mare de Déu i Sant Antoni stands in a pine forest near the town and is designed in the style of Neoclassical Renaissance architecture. Its grounds include a recreational area suitable for a day outdoors with the family. L’Esglèsia de la Transfiguració del Senyor was built in the 18th century and stands next to the town hall in the centre of Alfafara. For the local population, it is a religious building of significant cultural heritage value.
The Font de Dos Xorros is located in the old town next to the washhouse. It was built at the beginning of the 19th century and receives natural water from the spring of the Cova de la Font.
Festivals and traditions
The Festes patronals d’Alfafara officially begin on 6 August and are designated as a festival of tourist interest. On 7 August, the Divina Aurora is celebrated with a pre-dawn wake-up ritual featuring singing and a procession through the town’s streets. On 9 August, Alfafara’s patron saint festivities conclude with a communal dinner and a parade of “filaetes” by the Moros y Cristianos.
Geographical location
Alfafara town centre can be reached via the local CV-700 road. This runs from Muro d’Alcoi to Bocairent and connects the N-340 national road with the CV-81 regional road.
Visitor information
The Centre d’Interpretació Turística of the Mancomunitat de l’Alcoià i el Comtat is geared towards visitors who use the Via Verda del Xitxarra or wish to experience the Serra de Mariola. It enables visitors to learn about nature tourism as well as hiking and cycling routes, and to take part in guided routes and activities.
