Olave: Church Architecture, Forest Paths and the GR-225
Accommodation in Olave
Olave lies on the left bank of the river in the valley. The communal land of Olave covers 259 ha, including 152 ha of wooded areas and 41 ha of pastureland. For personal planning, forest and pastureland are presented as two clearly identified landscape components side by side.
Culture and History
The Monasterio de Leire had owned land in the Olave area since the 13th century. The Iglesia de San Pedro apóstol is a medieval building from the 13th century that was later extensively remodelled.
Its oldest surviving architectural element is the pointed-arch portal with archivolts and capitals decorated with plant motifs in relief. The church has a single-nave layout, a straight-ended chancel and a bell tower standing at the foot of the building.
Hiking
When it was officially presented, the GR-225 was 53 km long in total and divided into four stages. The sections named included Fuerte de San Cristóbal–Olabe, at 13.8 km, and Olabe–Saigots, at 14.1 km. The second stage connects Olabe (Oláibar) with Saigots (Esteribar).
When it was officially presented, the GR-225 had already been marked and signposted to publicise the escape route taken by some prisoners from the Penal de San Cristobal. In Olave, 16 bodies were exhumed as part of Navarra’s exhumation plan.
The Camino de Lurzei was restored by volunteers from Olabe and recently cleared of overgrowth. It climbs alongside boxwood stands beneath a pine forest; the path is clearly visible, but narrow and well defined.
At the start, a sign attached to a tree points to the “Camino de Olabe”. The circular route from Olabe via the Camino Lurzei and Alixeto is 6.3 km long and takes 2 hours and 12 minutes; it leads back to Olabe.
Nature
The summit of Alixeto, also called Aliseto or Elixatto, is marked by a geodetic survey point. A mountaineers’ mailbox stands a few metres away.
The different route formats and time estimates provide an objective basis for comparing short circular walks with multi-stage routes. Culture, landscape and hiking each place different emphasis, without prescribing a single way to visit.
For a holiday apartment in Olave, travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions can be compared on accommodation listing pages. You can consider the three fields separately and then compare them with the themes of the locality: architectural history, historic paths, forest, pastureland and named hiking destinations. The short, clearly timed circular-walk details thus stand alongside the multi-stage GR-225, while church architecture and historical tradition form a cultural focus. This makes it possible to consider the locality references and landscape components separately from the question of which accommodation features are important for your own travel dates and desired stay and which play a role in the respective planning.
The project to redesign the N-121-A included a section extending to the centre of Olave at kilometre point 10+200.
