History and Culture

The Real Fábrica de Municiones de Eugi was founded in 1766 on the site of an older ironworks and was a pioneering factory settlement in a rural area, inspired by the French Encyclopaedism movement.

The complex covered 10,000 m² and included coal stores, furnaces, moulding shops, workshops, facilities for cleaning munitions, canals and bridges.

Around 500 people once lived in the factory settlement of the Real Fábrica de Municiones de Eugi; it had its own school, doctor and church.

In 2016, the Government of Navarre classified the Real Fábrica de Municiones de Eugi as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) in the categories of monument and archaeological site.

The Centro de Referencia Histórica OLONDO has a permanent exhibition about the history of Eugi, the former arms factory, the natural surroundings, and the customs and traditions of the village.

The Centro de Referencia Histórica OLONDO also organises various activities related to the exhibition's content; individual visits are possible during opening hours on weekends and public holidays, while groups can arrange visits outside these times.

A local arts and crafts fair is held in Eugi with some regularity and includes demonstrations of traditional Basque rural sports, traditional crafts and gastronomic tastings.

Eugi's patron-saint festivities take place from 1 to 4 September in honour of San Gil.
