Discover Riocerezo: Churches, Mill and Vía de Bayona

Ríocerezo brings together distinctive churches, historic water technology and a route that connects the village with the entrance to Burgos. As a result, the villagescape combines architectural history, traces of craftsmanship and a route extending beyond the village.

Culture and Architectural History

The Molino de Riocerezo has been preserved as a visible testament to the local ethnographic heritage and is no longer in operation. Nevertheless, its history can still be read at a specific location: the former mill is located in Barrio Arriba by the canal that supplies the village’s vegetable gardens with water.

The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista combines Gothic-Cistercian and Baroque elements and dates from the 15th century. The Iglesia de Santa María also stands in the village centre as a visible landmark. Its single-nave church has side chapels and a polygonal apse; inside, ribbed star vaults can be seen. The main fabric of the church is dated to the 16th and 17th centuries. These features make it possible to view different construction phases and forms directly alongside one another, without explaining the village centre through a single period.

The Fuente Romana is also one of the village’s smaller architectural features. The stone structure has a pitched roof, while a round arch spans the water outlet. Its simple construction is on a different scale from the churches and adds a functional element of water supply to the historic impression.

Water and Routes

To operate the mill, the water of the local stream was diverted via a small weir or millrace. It thus moved a water wheel and the millstones driven by it. The preserved site, the canal and this technical sequence belong together: they show not only a structure, but also the connection between stream, water conveyance and use.

The Vía de Bayona passes through Ríocerezo and subsequently joins the Camino Francés at the entrance to Burgos. Thus, alongside the village-specific architectural and technical details, there is also a clearly named route connection.
