Cambrils – Coast, Port and History

Cambrils combines nine kilometres of coastline with fine, golden sand, shallow water and a gentle slope with a port whose daily life is shaped by the sea. Trawl boats arrive there every day; this maritime activity attracts visitors. In this way, coastal scenery and fishing stand side by side.

Coast and Port

A fish auction takes place at Cambrils fish market and attracts visitors. During the Ormeig festival, traditional maritime professions are reenacted in Cambrils. Both places and events reveal different aspects of maritime life: here, the focus is on the daily trade in fish, while there, it is on remembering traditional activities.

History and Culture

The Torre del Puerto served as a watchtower in the 17th century and now houses the Cambrils History Museum. The past and the building’s present-day museum use therefore coexist in the same structure. In the old town of Cambrils, also known as La Vila, medieval traces, narrow streets and balconies decorated with flowers and plants have been preserved.

The Torre de l’Ermita is a medieval defensive building in Cambrils. After climbing 80 steps, visitors reach a viewpoint with panoramic views over the municipality. The Vila Romana de la Llosa is located in the centre of Cambrils beside the beach and displays the remains of a Roman villa that was inhabited from the 1st century BC to the 6th century AD. The old town also contains air-raid shelters built during the Spanish Civil War.

Gardens and Exercise

The Parque Samà is located five kilometres inland from Cambrils. The grounds include romantic gardens, exotic birds, viewpoints, pavilions, modernist buildings, a lake and a maze. The coast and garden landscape therefore represent two clearly different local settings.

Cambrils is certified as a sports tourism destination and specialises in cycling tourism, sailing, football and athletics. Cycling routes lead from Cambrils, while cycle paths run along the coast. On the paths in the municipality, visitors can hike or go Nordic walking. The various forms of exercise therefore range from cycling tours and coastal paths to further sporting activities. The forms of exercise mentioned differ according to their surroundings: cycling routes and coastal paths connect cycling with two named local settings, while hiking and Nordic walking explicitly take place on paths within the municipality. The choice therefore remains tied to specific types of routes.

Gastronomy

Cambrils is considered the gastronomic capital of the Costa Daurada. The sea and the land provide high-quality products that local chefs showcase. Gastronomy adds another independent perspective on the town to the maritime, historical and landscape-related themes.
