Discover Saus: Historic Centre, Culture and Walking Routes

The historic centre of Saus has largely preserved the appearance it acquired in the 16th and 17th centuries. Its stone façades are part of this character, as are well-preserved old portals, stone-framed windows and cobbled streets. Santa Eugènia de Saus is listed in Catalonia as a cultural asset of national interest.

Culture and History

The church of Santa Eugènia de Saus originated as a Romanesque church dating from the end of the 12th or the beginning of the 13th century. In the 14th and 15th centuries, Santa Eugènia de Saus was heightened and fortified. The church has a single-nave layout. It also features a pointed barrel vault and a semicircular apse. Santa Eugènia de Saus was built from carefully hewn, regularly coursed stone blocks.

The building history of the church can therefore be read in its form and the materials used: the single-nave layout, the barrel vault and the semicircular apse are all part of the described appearance, as are the regularly coursed stone blocks. The heightening and fortification in the 14th and 15th centuries add a later historical layer to its Romanesque origins.

Can Simón has a large round-arched portal with voussoirs. The window on the upper floor has a keel-arched finish. Around 1978, two Iberian silos were discovered about 200 metres west of the centre of Saus. At the peak of production, the clog makers of Saus produced around 80 dozen wooden clogs per year.

The historical traces in Saus thus range from architectural details on residential buildings to the Iberian silos outside the historic centre. The clog makers are also part of the town's inherited history; at the peak of this activity, their production is recorded as around 80 dozen wooden clogs per year.

Townscape and Access

The Portal de les Eres provides access from the north to the former walled centre of Saus. Saus is located directly beside the GE623/630 road. This road runs from the A-7 near Orriols towards Empúries and L’Escala.

Landscape

The Font del Mal del Ventre is one of two springs along the course of the local stream, before it flows into the Fluvià. Visitors can cool off at the Font del Mal de Ventre. From a hill in Saus, the Pi de la Lluïsa overlooks the valley formed by the villages in this area.

Walking Routes and Discoveries

A Terraprim path connects Camallera with Saus via the lake. The route takes about an hour and a half on foot. Route 149 is a walk through four villages in Alt Empordà. It also passes through Saus.
