Tollo is best explored slowly: through its local history and architecture, as well as along paths that lead through a changing landscape. You can focus on different aspects without reducing the village to just one of them.

History and Church

The first documentary reference to Tollo dates from 1052; at that time, the boundaries of Piasca were marked out and divided from those of Tollo, Tudes and Porcieda.

From 1591 onward, Tollo and Tudes were governed by jointly drawn-up local regulations. These historical ordinances governed the protection of communal forests and required every resident to plant three trees each year—cherry, walnut, apple or English oak—on communal land.

Experts believe that the parish church of Tollo was built in the 16th century. The Church of San Julián has a rectangular apse, a single-nave layout and a simple porch on the south side. The bell gable of the Church of San Julián is considered Tollo’s only surviving example of medieval character.

Those who approach Tollo through its past therefore encounter a history of boundaries, shared local law and visible architecture. You can consider these historical traces separately from the impressions of the landscape and the hiking trails, without separating the two perspectives entirely.

Landscape

The area around Tollo and its parish church is crossed by the Santa Leocadia stream. To the east of the village are oak-covered slopes, whose vegetation becomes more open towards the hollow, giving way to open meadows.

Hiking

The Camino del Valle de Cereceda leads from Vega de Liébana through Tollo and Tudes to the abandoned settlement of Porcieda, and then descends to Potes.

A route from Vega de Liébana climbs uphill past a holm oak grove. From above, you can see the road from Vega de Liébana to Potes along the Quiviesa River, as well as Campollo, Maredes and the cross on La Viorna mountain.

One hiking route reaches La Cotera; from there, you can look out over Tollo, which, on arrival, is considered a village with a distinctive character.

The routes described place different emphasis on connections between villages, the ascent, the views and the view of the destination. When planning, you can consider these aspects separately rather than combining them into a fixed itinerary.

Posada de Tollo is accommodation in Tollo. When comparing holiday apartments in Tollo, you can review travel dates, room categories and cancellation policies side by side on the accommodation pages. The local history, the church’s design and the hiking trails provide the thematic framework, while the specific details belong to each individual accommodation.

Other places in the regional area include Enterrías, Tudes, Dobres, Cucayo and Vada.

On the hiking trail through the Cereceda Valley, you cross a bridge over the Río Frío and then climb through a holm oak grove.
