On the coast of Liencres, wave action has shaped abrupt and deeply indented coastal profiles. Along Liencres’s sandy beach, Holocene dunes line the Holocene beaches. The Parque Natural de las Dunas de Liencres was designated in 1986. A significant stand of maritime pines stabilizes the mobile dunes moved by the wind. After the mouth of the Río Pas, the Parque Natural de las Dunas de Liencres y Costa Quebrada runs along the beaches of Valdearenas and Canallave.

Coast and Activities

Valdearenas is located in the Parque Natural de las Dunas de Liencres and is 2,800 metres long. The beach is the longest and widest of the municipal beaches of Piélagos. Caution is advised when swimming on Valdearenas’s open-sea coast because of strong currents and eddies. Canallave is a windy open-sea beach with strong currents, separated from Valdearenas by the rocky promontory known as Peñuescas. Canallave Beach is frequently used by surfers. The Escuela de surf Liencres offers courses for beginners, skill improvement and competition-level surfing.

Routes

The “Parque Natural Dunas de Liencres” route starts at the park’s upper car park; it is estimated to take three and a half hours. The Costa Quebrada 1 route starts at the car park at Canallave Beach. The different starting points and stated duration provide two separate options for planning your day.

Nature and Geology

The Parque Natural de las Dunas de Liencres y Costa Quebrada includes part of the Costa Quebrada UNESCO Global Geopark, which was designated in 2025. The mouth of the Río Pas is included in the Parque Natural de las Dunas de Liencres y Costa Quebrada. The dunes of Liencres can be reached from the CA-231 via a 6 km detour on the CA-305. Somocuevas is a naturist beach with low visitor numbers, protected by a rocky promontory. Somocuevas has no infrastructure. Arnía is a small cove between rocky cliffs of considerable geological interest. Highly fossiliferous marls or marly limestones are visible on Arnía Beach. From Arnía, there is an exceptional view of the abrasion platform stretching from Soto de la Marina to the dune field of Liencres. For planning purposes, you can consider the nature park, open beaches and geological formations as separate thematic options.
