Gajano combines historic buildings with trails through its more closely described surroundings. In the Barrio La Riva, Route 4 – Ruta de los Agüero leads to the so-called “Torrejón de Gajano”, also known as Torre de Riva-Herrera Agüero. The hiking route is 10.5 kilometres long and takes approximately three hours. Its endpoint is at Casa Lomba o de la Encina, also known as Casa de Cuetos Riva-Agüero.

The stated length, approximate duration and fixed destination make the route tangible as an independent hiking stage. At the same time, several names are used for the buildings identified along the way and at the end, without requiring the individual stops to be confused with one another.

For a stay in Gajano, holiday apartments can be viewed by travel dates, apartment type and cancellation conditions. This information is part of the accommodation decision, while the church, towers, historic traces and trails define the character of the town. In this way, accommodation features and sightseeing remain recognisable as distinct aspects.

Culture and History

The Iglesia de San Martín has a Churrigueresque main altarpiece dating from 1723. The church was built in three stages between the 16th and 18th centuries. Its furnishings and construction history therefore point to two different historical reference points: a specifically dated altarpiece and a development spanning several centuries.

Gajano formed part of the route of the Roman Via Agrippa. Near Gajano’s parish church, there was also a medieval necropolis made up of stone slabs arranged in rows. The road route and burial site belong to different periods and also differ in their visible form.

Towers and Trails

A path leads uphill from Gajano’s parish church to the Torre de Gajano. The square tower has three storeys. Thus, a described route and a clearly defined architectural form meet at this location.

Route 4 – Ruta de los Agüero offers a longer hiking stage of 10.5 kilometres and approximately three hours. The path to the Torre de Gajano, by contrast, describes the connection from the parish church uphill to the square tower. Length, duration, direction and architectural form provide different points of reference for considering the trails and buildings.

Traditions and Nature

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de las Nieves belonged to the Rivero family. The Nuestra Señora de las Nieves festival is celebrated in Gajano on 5 August. The date thus stands alongside the chapel’s historic association with the Rivero family.

In the area described, a short educational trail runs throughout the entire area. It is approximately 1,100 metres long. Its approximate length and designated route distinguish this type of trail from the 10.5-kilometre Route 4 and its approximate duration of three hours.

The summer bus route between Somo and Santander stops in Pedreña, Gajano and Pontejos.
