On the banks of the Pas near Barcenilla, cornfields alternate with green meadows. The flatter area of the village also reflects the influence of this river: it lies on alluvial deposits and Quaternary terraces formed by the Pas. Barcenilla’s historical heritage includes the Iglesia de Santa María. Its entrance portal bears the year 1226; the church has a single nave, a rectangular floor plan and a Romanesque tradition.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Barcenilla, travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions can be considered as separate accommodation details. Independently of this, the village’s banks of the Pas, cultural heritage and routes stand alongside one another as distinct themes, each offering its own perspective on the stay.

Geographical setting

From the N-611, the local CA-233 road leads to Barcenilla near Puente Arce. The Fuente Vieja spring is located in the village district of San Martín. The Peñajorao karst complex extends into Barcenilla and complements the landscape shaped by the Pas with a geological feature.

Culture

The Iglesia de Santa María is characterized by high, robust buttresses and several simply crafted corbels. The original centre of Barcenilla is located in the Barrio de la Iglesia. Posadorios was formerly an independent village district; it included the San Martín church and the Molino de la Trampa mill.

Another historical detail can be found at the Ermita de San Gregorio y San Antonio: its bell gable was built in 1717. San Gregorio is celebrated in Barcenilla on 9 May, while the village also has a strong Bolo Palma tradition.

The Abrigo de Barcenilla has the most extensive stratigraphy in the region. From Barcenilla, it can be reached via a track leading close to Peña Obeña. Historical village structures, religious buildings and the traditions associated with Posadorios thus stand alongside an archaeological site whose stratigraphy has a particular regional significance.

Activities

The PasaXlaRiberadelPas route covers 3.7 kilometres when it starts in Barcenilla. The "Las Casonas" circular route includes ten points of interest. In addition, Barcenilla offers a free digital treasure hunt about its history and cultural heritage, available around the clock all year round. The different formats – a set route, a circular route with points of interest and a digital discovery tour – provide clear reference points for personal day planning. For personal day planning, the three activities can be distinguished by their respective character: the first organizes movement along a route, the second brings together several points of interest, and the third conveys history and cultural heritage digitally. Visitors can therefore weigh up a clearly defined route, concentrated local details and an open-ended way of engaging with historical topics. These differences complement the other impressions of the village without standardizing them. The landscape along the Pas, religious buildings, former village districts, the mill, the bell gable, Bolo Palma and the stratigraphy of the Abrigo represent different ways of experiencing Barcenilla. Considered together, they create an impression that brings together natural landscapes, architectural history, traditions and archaeology.
