Tinajo – Volcanic Trails, Churches and Local History
The Tinajo Histórico hiking trail runs through urban and peri-urban areas, passing characteristic houses, neighborhoods and nearby cultivated areas. The route is classified as easy and suitable for all groups; it begins at San Roque Church on Plaza de Tinajo.

Nature and Volcanic Landscapes
13.53 km² of Timanfaya National Park lie within the municipality of Tinajo. The Los Volcanes Nature Park and the protected landscape of La Geria are also located within the municipality.
The route to Caldera Blanca crosses lava flows from the Timanfaya eruption to an old volcanic cone surrounded by lava fields and lies in Los Volcanes Nature Park. A designated path and explanatory panels accompany this route. The Caldera de Los Cuervos hiking trail leads into the first volcanic cone of the Timanfaya eruption series; it too is easy and suitable for all groups and has a designated path and explanatory panels.
Montaña Los Rostros is a hiking trail at the foot of an old fissure volcano and is laid out as a circular route. Montaña Colorada forms a volcanic cone made of reddish lapilli; it was the last active eruptive vent of the Timanfaya series. The hiking trail of the same name circles the volcanic cone and passes lava flows and pyroclasts.
Los Rodeos is an easy hiking trail suitable for all groups. Its designated path has a surface that is easy to walk on, and the route lies in Los Volcanes Nature Park. The Tinajo Trail leads from Tinajo via gravel paths to the west coast and then climbs through volcanic terrain to Caldera Blanca. From there, the trail offers views of the volcanoes of Timanfaya National Park, Risco de Famara and the Chinijo Archipelago.
Culture and History
San Roque Church is located in the center of Tinajo and was built as a chapel in 1679. The church furnishing mentioned in an inscription was installed by F. R. Fernández on 20 May 1851.
The Ermita Nuestra Señora de Regla in La Vegueta (Yuco) was built toward the end of the 17th century through a public collection. The chapel contains interesting paintings as well as an altarpiece dedicated to the Virgin dating from the 17th century.
The Ermita de Los Dolores was built following a collective vow by the residents of Tinajo in connection with the volcanic eruptions of 1730 to 1736. According to local tradition, a wooden cross at the hermitage marks the place where the volcano came to a halt.
The Mancha Blanca Visitor and Interpretation Center presents permanent exhibitions on the volcanology, fauna, flora and coast of Timanfaya. It also offers free guided interpretive hikes on the Tremesana and Litoral routes. Other places include La Santa and El Cuchillo.
The agricultural terraces of Caldera de Guiguán were created by transforming the slope of the caldera into cultivated areas.
Markets and Events
The agricultural and craft market offers agricultural products, livestock products, seafood and baked goods. Its program includes demonstrations of traditional threshing, grape harvesting and grape treading, roasting corn, and making gofio.
Tinajo You Trail offers trail-running routes through volcanic landscapes. The event has grown over several years; its tenth edition was announced for 2026. The Festival de Senderismo de Tinajo combines hiking with cultural, gastronomic and health-related experiences and is a recurring event that began in 2022.
The San Roque festival takes place on 16 August at Plaza de San Roque in Tinajo Casco. The festival of Our Lady of Los Dolores is celebrated every year on 15 September; worshippers reach the chapel in Mancha Blanca from all parts of the island and the rest of the archipelago.
Trail La Vegueta is a sporting event featuring five- and ten-kilometer races, hiking activities and a children’s race over the weekend.
