Nature

The Montaña del Azufre Natural Monument is a former coastal volcano with yellow, red, orange, grey and black hues. The entire Montaña del Azufre Natural Monument is designated as a site of community importance on La Palma. A rare remnant of the tabaibal-cardonal vegetation has been preserved on the descent from Malpaíses to La Salemera.

Hiking Trails and Terrain

The PR LP 16.1 leads from the PR LP 16 to La Salemera, has a medium difficulty level rated 6 out of 10, and ends at the municipality’s most popular bathing area beside a lighthouse with avant-garde design. A walk along the Canal de Fuencaliente, where it crosses the LP-132 road, leads to Malpaíses’ rural and ethnographic features.

The Montaña del Azufre Natural Monument can be reached via a track that connects the road descending from the LP-132 to La Salemera with the environmental waste treatment complex. The access route to Montaña del Azufre partially follows the local SL VM 121 hiking trail. The crater and the northern and western slopes of Montaña del Azufre lie in an area where educational and recreational activities compatible with its protection are permitted. The regulations governing public use of the protected area provide for the maintenance and signposting of the SL VM 121 hiking trail and the access path to Playa del Azufre.

The mountain bike route network of the municipality of Villa de Mazo includes a downhill route from El Pilar to La Salemera, rated “very high” in terms of physical and technical difficulty.

Coast and Festivals

La Salemera in the municipality of Villa de Mazo has a small bay of volcanic origin with black sand. La Salemera is located on the coast of the municipality of Villa de Mazo, where swimming and diving are possible, particularly in the large natural pool at its end. The festivals of La Salemera included a maritime procession in honour of the Virgen del Carmen. The festivities traditionally concluded with the decoration of boats.

Culture and Everyday Life

The former Molino de Pérez Guerra in Tirimaga was once the centre of the Malpaíses district. Several traditional rural houses with two storeys, exterior staircases and external balconies, as well as hipped roofs, have been preserved in Malpaíses. At least three well-preserved niches for crosses can be found in Malpaíses.

You can also visit Lodero as another local area page.

At the Villa de Mazo farmers’ market, local farmers, livestock breeders and craftspeople come together on Saturdays and Sundays to display and sell local products to the public.
