Holiday apartment in Es Migjorn Gran: Talayots, coastal paths and coves

Es Migjorn Gran combines impressive evidence of Talayotic culture with a karst cave, protected natural areas and a varied coastline.

Culture and history

The Talayotic settlement of Sant Agustí is located in the municipality of Es Migjorn Gran and is one of the most monumental on the island. It comprises two talayots, up to eight Talayotic houses and seven structures with elements resembling those of Taula enclosures. However, the complete structure of these buildings has not been preserved. One of the talayots has an interior chamber with an original oleaster-wood beam structure. The origins of the town of Es Migjorn Gran are associated with the construction of the Església de Sant Cristòfol in 1768.

A recurring cultural event is the Gran Migjornale, which takes place every two years. During this event, private homes in Es Migjorn Gran open their doors to visitors, and artists display their works there.

Nature and trails

The Cova des Coloms is located in the Binigaus Valley near Es Migjorn Gran. The karst cave is approximately 25 metres high, 20 metres wide and 110 metres long. It can be reached from the cemetery of Es Migjorn Gran via the signposted Camí de la Malagarba.

The Camí de Cavalls is designated as a historically and culturally restored public, free-of-charge path or passageway and is owned by the Consell Insular de Menorca. It can be used on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. Behind Cala Atalis, a section of this path runs along Menorca’s coast.

Binigaus Beach is also connected to the trail network. From Es Migjorn Gran, access is via Sant Tomàs; from there, it is approximately a 15-minute walk along a section of the Camí de Cavalls to the beach. The cycling route from Es Migjorn Gran to Binigaus Beach passes through the Binigaus Valley to the beach and is described as a low-difficulty route. At Binigaus Beach, visitors can snorkel and take long walks by the sea. The beach is also part of an area of special natural interest extending from Cala Mitjana to Binigaus.

Protected coves

Cala Escorxada is located in the municipality of Es Migjorn Gran and forms part of the ANEI nature area from Cala Mitjana to Binigaus. The U-shaped beach is protected by Mediterranean pine vegetation and dense pine forests. Cala Escorxada can be reached on foot from the Cala Mitjana car park via a section of the Camí de Cavalls.

Cala Fustam lies within the protected ANEI nature area extending from Cala Mitjana to Binigaus. From Cala Mitjana, a signposted route of approximately 6 kilometres leads there, passing Cala Trebalúger. The sandy and rocky seabeds off Cala Fustam are home to diverse marine fauna.

Cala Trebalúger is a beach approximately 175 metres long and around 40 metres wide, surrounded by pine forests. Visitors can swim nude and snorkel here. Access involves a route of approximately 3 kilometres with a significant difference in elevation; suitable footwear and good physical condition are therefore recommended.

Beaches and coastal access points

Cala Atalis is a small cove approximately 10 metres long and 1 metre wide. To access it, leave the vehicle in the Sant Tomàs development, then continue on foot for approximately 20 minutes. Sant Tomàs Beach is approximately 500 metres long. It has play areas, jetties, showers, a lifeguard service and restaurants; parasols and sun loungers are also available for hire. Sant Tomàs can be reached from Es Migjorn Gran by road, and public transport is also available there.
