Es Castell is located at the entrance to the port of Maó and combines a distinctive harbour history with coastal paths, coves and traces of British rule. The town was founded in 1771 during the second period of British rule over Menorca and grew up around s'Esplanada.

History and culture
Around l’Esplanada, the former parade ground, Es Castell preserves a British heritage. The buildings and barracks there are painted red in the typical English style. The Torre d'en Penjat, also known as Torre Stuart, is part of the historic setting. The coastal defence tower was built in 1798 near Fort Marlborough.
Fort Marlborough is an 18th-century British fortification and now serves as an interpretation centre for the military history of the port of Maó. The complex includes underground rooms, trenches, mines and countermines. The Military Museum of Menorca offers another gateway to the island’s history: it displays weapons, objects, models and maps covering Menorca’s military history from prehistoric times to the present day. The museum is partly housed in the Quarter de Cala Corb, a former engineers’ barracks built by the English in 1771.
Es Castell’s maritime heritage is also present. Thalassa is the first centre dedicated to interpreting Menorca’s maritime heritage. The Molí de Santa Creu was restored in 2014 as part of a project intended to convert the former windmills into visitor attractions. It is one of the five wind-powered grain mills that Es Castell once had.
Coast and coves
In the area around Es Castell, the Camí de sa Cala leads to a car park from which visitors can walk to the bathing area of Cala Sant Esteve. Cala Sant Esteve has a rocky beach and waters where boats can anchor.
Es Castell’s eastern location makes it possible to see the sunrise from its coves. A walk to the Torre d'en Penjat offers views of the harbour entrance. The coast, historic sites and maritime themes therefore provide different focal points that can be considered separately when planning a day.
Cycling route and paths
For cycle tourism, one stage from Maó to Es Castell follows quiet country roads. It is very easy, just over 7 kilometres long, runs mostly on paved surfaces and has very little change in elevation. Compared with a walk along the coast, the focus here is on the combination of route, surface and elevation profile.
