Culture and history
Ciutadella showcases its history through several structures. Bastió de Sa Font is one of the five bastions of the former city walls built in the 16th century. The Ciutadella Municipal Museum is now located within the complex. Castell de Sant Nicolau, also known as Castillo de San Nicolás, is situated at the entrance to Ciutadella harbour.

In the heart of Ciutadella, the Diocesan Museum is housed in the Sant Agustí monastery, also known as El Socors, which dates from the 17th century. The museum displays archaeological materials connected with the island, as well as paintings and prints from the 18th and 19th centuries. There is also a permanent archaeology exhibition. Guided tours of the monastery include visits to significant areas of the building, including the cloister.
One building has a single-nave layout and several side chapels; the Chapel of Souls is an example of 18th-century Minorcan Baroque.
Routes and landscape
There are also clearly defined routes around Ciutadella. The Ciutadella N-4 is a circular route approximately 43 kilometres long, beginning and ending at Ciutadella's old cemetery. More than 20 kilometres of this route follow the Camí de Cavalls, the GR 223, passing through forests, scrubland and wetlands.
A relaxed bicycle tour leads from Ciutadella to Ferreries via rural roads. The described section is just over five kilometres long and takes about 45 minutes. The quarries also contain a park called Laberint del Vergers, as well as a small botanical garden.
Coast and evening atmosphere
Cala Macarella is one of the most famous unspoilt coves in the municipality of Ciutadella. The cove has fine white sand and turquoise water. Around the Punta Nati lighthouse, many people gather at sunset to watch the sun set over the sea.
Festivals and flavours
Around the summer solstice, Ciutadella celebrates the Fiestas de Sant Joan. The main celebrations take place on 23 and 24 June; they begin on the preceding Sunday with Dia des Be. The Sant Joan festival includes the Jocs des Pla, medieval equestrian games held in the late afternoon or at dusk.
Specialities associated with the festival include Ciutadella's Sant Joan ensaïmades, which are made with clarified butter.
