Abantro: Culture and Nature in Parque Natural de Redes
Accommodation in Abantro
Abantro is located in Parque Natural de Redes. The houses are arranged along a steep slope at an altitude of around 540 m, above the Tanes Reservoir. In the green landscape around Abantro, the Nalón River winds its way through the area, while steep roads help shape the character of the village. The combination of the hillside location, water and green landscape gives the village a clearly recognisable spatial character.
Culture
The historic surroundings include the Church of Santa María de Tanes, whose construction was commissioned in the mid-16th century. It is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. The Colegiata de Santa María la Real de Tanes also stands on the edge of the Tanes Reservoir. Thus, the surroundings of Abantro bring together ecclesiastical architectural history and the landscape by the water.
Together with Tanes and Prieres, Abantro belongs to the Tercia de Tanes. The village itself has impressive stone houses featuring carefully executed masonry. Most of the buildings follow traditional Asturian architecture, which combines stone and wood. In addition, there are many centuries-old hórreos and paneras, adding further historic architectural elements to the villagescape. Stone, wood and the traditional storage buildings create different visible forms of the local building culture.
A bell in Abantro was used to call people to the “conceyu”. At the Museo de la Apicultura in Tañes, the life cycle of bees, beekeeping and honey production are explained. Thus, the immediate surroundings include not only churches and historic houses, but also traditional community structures and beekeeping.
Nature and Trails
Parque Natural de Redes has a network of signposted hiking trails. One specific route is the Senda Coballes–La Trapa, which covers 10.5 kilometres and is designed as a circular hike. Tanes, Prieres and Abantro also form a route. The different types of trails can be compared easily because they describe different ways of exploring the landscape.
Abantro is located on the AS-17 road. Together with the hillside location, the steep roads, the reservoir above the village and the green landscape, this creates a close connection between the village structure, the body of water and the routes. The Nalón River adds another defining element to the landscape around Abantro.
For planning purposes, you can distinguish the routes mentioned by their form: the signposted network opens up several directions, the circular hike covers a set distance, and the route through Tanes, Prieres and Abantro connects named places. This brief comparison makes it easier to distinguish mentally between the different route options.
