San Martín lies below Peña Sobia; as an important road junction, the town is connected by routes towards Proaza, to Somiedo via Puerto de San Lorenzo, and to the province of León via Puerto Ventana.

Culture

Barrio del Canto, the oldest part of San Martín, still contains remains of a necropolis; the hill was also home to the now-vanished Ermita de San Martino.

The Palacio de los Marqueses de Valdecarzana is a 17th-century noble palace in San Martín. Its layout is arranged around a central courtyard; the three two-storey building wings have a portico supported by pillars on the ground floor and a wooden gallery on the upper floor.

The Chalet de Don Santiago, a private 19th-century building in San Martín, stands on Plaza España. It was built on commission from Joaquín Fernández Prida and later passed into the ownership of Santiago García Fuentes’s heirs.

Daily life and cuisine

San Martín concentrates most of Teverga’s shops and restaurants. The Casa Aladino restaurant serves traditional dishes made with regional products, including roasted or stewed kid, pote de berza, beans with wild boar, and a selection of cured meats.
