Culture

In 780, the Church of Santianes de Pravia was built in the municipality of Pravia and dedicated to Saint John the Apostle and Evangelist. Santianes de Pravia, also in the municipality of Pravia, is regarded as the oldest church of Asturian pre-Romanesque architecture. The church is not permanently open to the public; a prior appointment is therefore required for a visit.

In Santianes de Pravia, next to the pre-Romanesque Church of Saint John the Apostle and Evangelist, is the Museo Prerrománico de Santianes. The museum displays archaeological pieces recovered during excavations of the church. The museum also includes an audiovisual presentation about the Asturian monarchy in Pravia, a model of the original church and a photographic mural about the pre-Romanesque churches of Asturias.

Landscape

The Valle de Arango driving route is 27 km long and begins and ends in Pravia. It leads to Loro and Villavaler at the foot of Ablanedo and La Castañal; from there, views of the finest landscapes in the area can be enjoyed. The driving route highlights the 14th-century Torre de Arango and continues to the 17th-century Palacio de Inclán. It also leads to the Molino de Veiga, which continues to operate using traditional methods.

The Valle de Arango walking route runs through a broad valley along the middle course of the Aranguín River, whose flat, sedimentary soils are fertile for agriculture. For planning a day, the 27 kilometres of the driving route and the course of the walking route can be compared as different scales. Pravia is associated with salmon, horticulture and the ingredients used in Asturian fabada.
