Trebnje brings together significant art, sacred architectural history, medieval traces and marked connections to the surrounding landscape. Between the central gallery, the Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary and the historic Trebanjski grad, a multifaceted picture of this Slovenian town emerges.

Culture in the Centre

The Galerija likovnih samorastnikov Trebnje has been Slovenia’s central institution for naïve art since 1971. It houses around 1,500 works of art by more than 300 artists. In addition to this collection, the gallery offers a permanent exhibition, temporary exhibitions and various events.

The Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary stands in the centre of Trebnje. The current three-nave building was constructed in 1443 in the Late Gothic style. Its interior includes a main altar by the woodcarver Janežič, featuring a painting of the Assumption of Mary by Matevž Langus, as well as a Way of the Cross designed by Langus. The presbytery contains frescoes by Koželj.

Other institutions also preserve the town’s cultural memory. The Centru za izobraževanje in kulturo Trebnje houses the permanent exhibition Rastoča knjiga, dedicated to people who have had a significant influence on the life of the town. In the Knjižnica Pavla Golie Trebnje, a memorial room for the poet and playwright Pavel Golia was established in 1983.

History and Landscape

Trebanjski grad (Treffen) stands on a hill below Bukovje on the right bank of the Temenica River. The complex was built around the year 1000. Its notable architectural features include a square tower with Roman foundations, a round tower with a secret passage dating from the time of the Ottoman incursions, and a left and right wing dating from the early 16th century.

In the wider area, the Temeniška Valley is considered Slovenia’s longest blind valley. The Baragova pohodna pot connects the town, the landscape and movement. It has been popular with hikers for a decade and a half. Most of the 18-kilometre circular route runs through pleasant woodland or meadow landscapes. The route begins in Trebnje in front of the Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary.

Distinctive Landmark and Local Events

A special geographical marker can be found at the western entrance to the town: the 15th meridian passes through Trebnje and is marked there by a sign and a radio-controlled clock. The clock displays the exact time in Central Europe.

Local traditions are also reflected in the event Iz trebanjskega koša. It offers visitors local specialities, creative activities and a varied programme for all generations. The Medgeneracijska točka Temenica has 15 pétanque courts and four bowling lanes; recreation and various competitions take place there.
