Wellness

A magnificent chestnut avenue connects Dobrna’s spa with the town centre. Another striking chestnut avenue, 200 years old, stands in the spa park. A Populus alba also grows there and is considered the third-largest known specimen of its species in Slovenia. Thus, the townscape brings together thermal history, parkland and old trees without the individual elements losing their own stories.

Nature

The Hudičev Graben gorge is approximately 1 kilometre long. From the centre of Dobrna, it can be reached via a route of about 2 kilometres that takes approximately 30 minutes. The route through the gorge features numerous rapids and waterfalls. In this water-rich setting, the Drenovec stream plunges over rock overhangs by the Ledenica Cave and via the Drenovec Waterfall into the Dobrnica torrent.

The Šumečnik Waterfall also showcases the area’s rugged relief: its cascade section is 4 metres high and has a pool; the cascades have a total height of 7 metres. Ledenica Cave itself was expanded from a natural limestone cave into an ice storehouse to cool the beer from the brewery at Dobrnica Castle. Nearby there is a Kneipp spring with clear spring water used for Kneipp treatments.

Trails

There are approximately five marked cycling routes around Dobrna, with varying lengths and difficulty levels. From the centre of Dobrna, the pond in Lokovina can also be reached on foot or by bicycle. Visitors can fish at the pond.

The Ana Trail runs through hilly terrain between the Dobrnica torrent and the Hudinja River, which flows in from the direction of Vitanje. Its final ascent leads to a panoramic view of Dobrna and the surrounding area. The trail passes the Šumej farmstead and also leads to the Blažič farm, where honey is also offered to visitors. The Loška Trail passes the ruins of Schlangenbur g and the Valley of the Mills. At Žeblarjeva Peč there is an equipped climbing route; from the summit, there is a view into the valley.

Culture

Dobrnica–Gutenek Castle was built in the 17th century. It can be reached from Dobrna in approximately 30 minutes on foot. Kačji grad Castle is situated on a hill above Lokovina; from Dobrna, it can be reached via signposted trails.

The present-day Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary was built in 1844 in the Baroque style on the ruins of an older church. It is the central sacred building in the centre of Dobrna. The Polenek Cultural Heritage House contains a collection of approximately 10,000 old objects assembled by the collector Jože Polenek.

The preserved 450-year-old Vovk Mill, which is still in operation, stands in the Valley of the Mills. The Šumej farmstead in Brdce above Dobrna preserves a black kitchen, offering insight into the way of life 300 years ago.

Culinary delights

At the Minka farm, homemade dried-meat products and a wide selection of aperitifs are served. Walnut bread is considered a culinary speciality in the Dobrna destination; visitors can also prepare it themselves.
