Culture and History
The Princely Court, Knežji dvor, was built on Roman foundations. In the basement rooms of Knežji dvor, visitors can experience the largest in-situ presentation of the remains of Roman Celeia, covering more than 1,000 m². Stara grofija is a Renaissance palace and houses the Celje Regional Museum. The Celje Ceiling is a rare example of secular illusionistic painting in Slovenia.
The house in Pečovnik has been open as the Alma M. Karlin Memorial House since 2014 and features the permanent exhibition “The Lonely Journey of Alma M. Karlin”. Visitors can see authentic living quarters, personal belongings, photographs and documents there.
The Early Christian Baptistery is a rare surviving and documented example of late antique sacred architecture in Slovenia. It has been prepared as an archaeological monument and gives visitors insight into one of the oldest pieces of evidence of Christianity in Slovenia.
The Celje archaeological site traces the development of the city from the Celtic settlement of Keleia to the Roman municipium of Claudia Celeia. Part of the site is open to the public through the “Mesto pod mestom” exhibition, where visitors can see ancient roads, mosaics and architecture.
The U4 artists’ district is a creative area with ten artists and an artist-run gallery. The “V gosteh pri fotografu Pelikanu” programme includes portrait photography in the glass photo studio.
Photo House Pelikan dates from 1899 and is an outpost of the Museum of Recent History Celje. A skylight studio has been preserved at Photo House Pelikan, where photography can still take place. The Celje Calvary on Jožefov hrib consists of four of the original five chapels and a Golgotha group.
City and Trails
Celje railway station is located near the old town. The cycle route from Celje to Laško begins at the park-and-ride car park. Most of the 12 km cycle route from Celje to Laško follows a cycle path along the left bank of the Savinja.
The Centralka city card and app for Celje combines payment of parking fees, the purchase of public transport tickets and bicycle rental.
Winter and Summer
Celjska Koča offers a ski area and a toboggan run in winter. In summer, Celjska Koča has numerous hiking and cycling trails. The summer Bobkart toboggan run “Celjski dirkač” at Celjska Koča is 800 m long.
Landscape and Urban Forest
Mount Tolsti Vrh is located in the surroundings of the Municipality of Celje. Mount Kjumberk, Mount Gozdnik and the Sv. Uršula peak are also located in the same area.
The Celje urban forest has 14 km of well-maintained hiking trails. The treehouse in the Celje urban forest offers creative workshops, concerts, poetry evenings and exhibitions.
