Veľká Hradná lies at the northern edge of the loess-covered Nitrianska pahorkatina upland. The village is located near Považský Inovec and in the upper reaches of the Hradniansky potok stream. Points of interest from a landscape and cultural-historical perspective include the Svinica nature monument, Kaštieľ Patrovec and traces of an earlier settlement.

Landscape

Svinica is a protected nature monument in the cadastral areas of Veľká Hradná and Trenčianske Jastrabie. It protects an ascending section of a stream above the Svinica reservoir. Stands of ash and alder trees have been preserved there, with bird cherry occurring abundantly. The aquatic communities of Svinica include the protected noble crayfish (Astacus astacus) and the rare mayfly Nigrobaetis niger. The fourth level of protection applies in the Svinica nature monument; the third level of nature conservation protection applies in its buffer zone.

Culture

Kaštieľ Patrovec in Veľká Hradná is a national cultural monument and is used as a hotel and restaurant. The church tower also preserves traces of local history: One bell was cast in 1919 by Pavol Ranko from Trenčín and transferred there from an earlier chapel. A second church bell was also cast by Pavol Ranko in 1936. The Roman Catholic church in Veľká Hradná was built in 1935. The Church of Our Lady of Lourdes in Veľká Hradná belongs to the parish of Dubodiel.

History

Hradisko, which at the beginning of the 12th century was the political, administrative and sacral-religious centre of the Hradniansky Archdeaconry, was located in the cadastral area of Veľká Hradná. A castle once stood in the Kostolnica district. Another local tradition is the production of straw mats. The traditional costume worn in Veľká Hradná belongs to the West Slovak costume group, which is associated with the former Nitra County.

Hiking trails

A marked hiking trail passes through Patrovec, where the Inovecký maratón is held regularly. The site of a vanished castle settlement is also believed to be located on a wooded hill near Veľká Hradná. From the end of the village in the direction of Malá Hradná, a forest path leads to a meadow and onward towards the presumed site.
