Landscape and water
Veľká Domaša is a multipurpose water-management structure in the Vranov nad Topľou District and is considered the most important recreational centre there.
At 1,092 metres, Šimonka is the highest point of the Slanské vrchy and offers panoramic views. The summit of Šimonka can be reached from Zámutov, Hermanovce nad Topľou, Hlinné or Rudlov in the Vranov nad Topľou District.
Culture and history
The Basilica of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Vranov nad Topľou is a late Gothic Roman Catholic church built in 1580. The former Pauline monastery is attached to the basilica; it has a Baroque portal and a valuable fresco inside. A guided tour of the basilica can be requested from the Sever Roman Catholic parish office.
The Jewish cemetery in Vranov was established in the 18th century and added to the state register of cultural monuments in 1963.
The Barkóczy family crypt below Čičva Castle is open to tourists; it was built in 1909 in the Neo-Romanesque style.
The Hanušovce nad Topľou Archaeopark is a living open-air archaeological museum with five dwellings. The five houses represent five periods from prehistory to the early Middle Ages. Among other activities, visitors can work with a stone axe, weigh bronze or iron swords, and grind grain on a rotary quern.
The Zámutov House of Folk Traditions displays old furniture, textiles, pictures and equipment from traditional farming households. It can be visited at any time by prior telephone appointment; the operators provide explanations of the exhibits.
The permanent exhibitions inside Hanušovce nad Topľou Chateau are inaccessible due to renovation work. The archaeological exhibition in the chateau cellar and the Archaeopark are open to visitors.
The Hornozemplínske Folklore Festivals include regional dishes and local gastronomic specialities.
Nature and trails
A 2.6-kilometre-long asphalted section of the Zámutovská kolejka forestry educational trail can be travelled by bicycle, inline skates, wheelchair or pushchair.
The Oblík National Nature Reserve forms part of the 925-metre-high mountain of the same name in the cadastral area of Hermanovce nad Topľou. Oblík is accessible via an educational trail with four stations, which can be reached from Hermanovce nad Topľou or Petrovce by following yellow and blue hiking trail markings.
Grófsky park Tovarné is a preserved remnant of the park that once belonged to Count Hadik-Barkóci’s chateau. It was laid out on the model of an English landscape park with paths and hunting trails. Near Grófsky park Tovarné there is a rest area with a pavilion and seating, as well as a replica of the count’s gate.
Visiting and orientation
The Hanušovský Viaduct is part of an active railway line. Tourists are not allowed to cross it on foot, but they can safely view and photograph it from below and from the surrounding roads and paths.
