The Franciscan complex in Stropkov is a national cultural monument and is listed in the Central Register of Monuments under number 245/1–2. Kaštieľ Stropkov preserves a special historical trace: the château is the last surviving secular part of the vanished town castle. Its most valuable area is the so-called Knights’ Hall, with preserved Renaissance features; the ground floor and attic are used for museum purposes.
Culture and History
The Renaissance tower of the Church of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ in Stropkov dates from the 16th century and was opened to the public after its restoration. The church tower has seven storeys and is almost 55 metres high. Small museum exhibitions have been set up on the individual storeys.
The Driečna Village Museum in the local district of Driečna, part of Vladiča, presents the history and traditions of Rusyn rural life. Its exhibitions include “From Cradle to Grave”, “Temples”, “The Room of Socialism” and “Technology in a Cobweb”. The municipality of Tokajík is also home to the exhibition “Fascist Repressions in Eastern Slovakia” of the Museum of the Slovak National Uprising.
The Jewish cemetery in Tisinec has 1,002 gravestones that have been numbered, cleaned and re-erected. A dirt road leads to the cemetery; information boards in Hebrew and Slovak stand in front of the site. The grave of the Stropkov rabbi Chaim Yosef Gottlieb (1790–1867), known as the Stropkov Rav and still visited by believers from around the world, is also located there.
Traditional pilgrimages take place on Buková hôrka every year at Pentecost, on the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord and on the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. A war cemetery located above a municipality is a national cultural monument.
Nature
Kozinec, Kučkov and Baňa are mountains in the vicinity of Stropkov District. Kozí Brad is a mountain in the vicinity of Stropkov District.
The lookout tower on Ščob above Stropkov offers views of the Ondavská vrchovina highlands. From the settlement of Baňa near Šandal, the lookout tower can be reached via an easy, 1 km-long route in approximately 25 minutes each way.
Baňa reaches an elevation of 526 metres and can be accessed via several well-maintained hiking trails. From there, views extend to the Vihorlat Mountains with Sninský kameň, the Slanské Mountains, the Low Beskids, the Čergov Mountains, and the Ondavská and Laborecká vrchovina highlands.
The Vladiča Waterfalls are located on the Driečna stream in the cadastral territory of the municipality of Vladiča, near a blue-marked hiking trail connecting Driečna and Habura via the Klimov saddle. The Driečna–Puławy cycle route in Stropkov District also begins in Vladiča–Driečna. It is 203 km long and leads to Puławy in Poland; the Slovak section is 53 km long.
Experiences
Jubilárny Park has been a centre of craft markets during the Stropkov Fair for several years. The park includes a lime-tree avenue designed as a recreation zone, planted in memory of the festivities celebrated there.
