High Tatras: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Gerlachovský štít is the highest peak in the Tatras, Slovakia and the Carpathians. The Tatranská magistrála, a 46.25-kilometre-long, red-marked hiking trail, crosses the southern slope of the High Tatras. Sedielko is the highest mountain pass at an altitude of 2,376 metres.

Nature

Skalnaté pleso lies at 1,751 metres above sea level in the Skalnatá Valley beneath the southern slopes of Lomnický štít. At Lomnický štít, a botanical garden presents plant species that grow only in this region. The Tatra National Park (TANAP) was founded in 1949. The High Tatras National Park was established as the first national park of its kind in Slovakia.

The nearby area includes Východná Vysoká, Divá veža, Velický štít and Bradavica; all four are mountains. The area also includes Votrubova Chata, a historic site, and Tatrzański Park Narodowy, a park.

The Slovak and Polish parts of the High Tatras have formed a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1993. The Tatra chamois is a symbol of the Tatras and has evolved in isolation since the Ice Age.

Culture

The TANAP Museum in Tatranská Lomnica presents the nature and history of the Tatras, as well as the former life and culture of the people living at the foot of the Tatras. The museum depicts typical Tatra animals in dioramas; it also displays ethnographic exhibitions on the material and spiritual culture of the communities at the foot of the Tatras and in the Tatras.

The Neo-Gothic Church of the Immaculate Conception in Starý Smokovec was built in 1888 in the Alpine style, with characteristic half-timbering. In the wider regional area, Kežmarok is home to the Wooden Articular Church, a church.

Getting Around

The cable car to Lomnický štít overcomes a difference in elevation of 855 metres in 8.5 minutes. Starý Smokovec is a transport hub with a branch of the Tatra Electric Railway and a cable car to Hrebienok.

Skalnaté pleso can be reached from Tatranská Lomnica by cable car, as well as on foot from Hrebienok or Chata pri Zelenom plese. Eighteen stylish wooden rowing boats and one sport rowing boat are available at the jetty of Štrbské pleso.

Tatras Tower is a 53-metre-high, wheelchair-accessible tower; its entrance is located at 1,367 metres above sea level. The walk from Hrebienok to the best-known and accessible waterfalls takes 30 minutes and is also suitable for older people or children.
