History

Veľký Kýr was first documented in writing in 1113. The mention appears under the name Ker in a charter issued by King Coloman. Through this charter, the village was transferred to Zobor Monastery. The year 1113 also marks the earliest date mentioned here in the documented history of the settlement.

Culture

One of the defining buildings is the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Veľký Kýr. It is a Baroque church created in 1768 through the complete reconstruction of an older medieval church. The church contains a stone baptismal font dating from the mid-19th century. The church is also in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. Its architectural history, furnishings and present-day use come together here in a single sacred building.

The Trinity Chapel in Veľký Kýr is a late Baroque chapel dating from 1793. Its Louis XVI-style altar features a painting of the Holy Trinity from 1820.
