Nové Zámky: Nature, Culture and Thermal Water

Žitavský luh is a 124-hectare protected area in the Nové Zámky District and preserves the last remnant of an original meandering watercourse.

Nature

Each year, spotted crake and western marsh harrier breed in Žitavský luh; the area is also an important resting and stopover site for waterbirds, especially garganey.

Parížske močiare is a 590-hectare protected area in the Nové Zámky District and also the only confirmed breeding site of the aquatic warbler in Slovakia.

The Čenkovská step National Nature Reserve is one of two national nature reserves within the Čenkov protected area. It is home to the only occurrence of Ephedra distachya in Slovakia.

Kamenínske slaniská is a 144.74-hectare Natura 2000 site in Kamenín and Kamenný Most in the Nové Zámky District.

Berek Forest Park in Nové Zámky features oak trees more than 200 years old.

Culture and History

The Múzeum Jána Thaina has permanent exhibitions on archaeology, history, ethnography and notable figures from the region. It researches, collects and makes accessible the cultural heritage of Nové Zámky and the surrounding area—from archaeological finds and historical and folk-art collections to valuable library holdings.

The Galéria umenia Ernesta Zmetáka presents permanent exhibitions of European art from the 16th to the 20th century, as well as a permanent exhibition dedicated to Lajos Kassák. It also organises guided tours, workshops, lectures and film screenings.

Palárikovo Hunting Lodge is a late Classicist building with an extensive English park and a unique technical monument, a wooden water tower. It can be visited seasonally; guided tours take place on Tuesdays from 11:00 to 17:00.

Since 2007, the building has housed an exhibition of the Šurany City Museum documenting the development of society, the town and its immediate surroundings.

The Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Cross in Nové Zámky was built in 1584 and 1585. The Baroque Trinity group in Nové Zámky dates from 1749 and commemorates the major plague epidemic of 1740.

The surviving bastions of the Nové Zámky fortress still reveal the former fortress and the town’s hexagonal layout. The Nové Zámky Calvary dates from 1779 and is located on the surviving Forgách Bastion.

The Zámeček archaeological tell near Nitriansky Hrádok was formed by the accumulated remains of settlements belonging to several generations approximately 5,000 years ago.

The Orthodox synagogue in Nové Zámky, which has survived to the present day, is rectangular, single-storey and equipped with a choir; several Holocaust memorials are located in the synagogue and its grounds. Group and individual visits can be arranged in advance through the tourist information office or by email.

Thermal Water and Exercise

The geothermal water of Podhájska was tapped in 1973 and reaches up to 83°C at a depth of 1,900 metres. Podhájska Thermal Bath uses highly mineralised geothermal healing water whose mineral composition is comparable to that of the Dead Sea. The thermal bath includes the Aquamarin wellness centre with bathing, vitality and sauna areas, as well as massage services.

The Vadaš Thermal Resort in Štúrovo covers 25 hectares and has nine pools.

The thermal water at Štrand Emila Tatárika emerges from a 1,506-metre-deep geothermal borehole and reaches a temperature of 52°C.

The Burda Mountains are part of the Kováčovské kopce National Nature Reserve. The 30.5-kilometre cycling loop around Burda starts and ends in Štúrovo in the Nové Zámky District and passes through Kamenica nad Hronom, Chľaba and Leľa.

Getting Around

The Danube forms part of the southeastern border of the Nové Zámky District with Hungary. Road border crossings in the Nové Zámky District are located in Štúrovo and Salka. Nové Zámky and Palárikovo are important railway junctions in the Nové Zámky District.

Žitavská paprika has protected designation of origin status in the European Union.
