Nové Zámky between Fortress History, Thermal Waters and Cycle Paths

Nové Zámky combines fortress history, thermal waters and cycle paths with cultural attractions and a peaceful natural setting. The town was founded in the 16th century on the site of four villages that had been destroyed by the Turks. Most of the former fortress bastions can still be identified in the town plan. Those who approach the town’s history through various sites will therefore find both traces of its foundation and reminders of later historical events.

Culture

At the Múzeum Jána Thaina v Nových Zámkoch, the cultural heritage of Nové Zámky and its surroundings is researched, collected and made accessible. The permanent exhibitions focus on archaeology, history, ethnography and regional personalities. Archaeology directs attention to material traces, history to developments over time, ethnography to ways of life and regional personalities to individual biographies. Educational tours, specialist lectures, and history and local studies lessons complement the exhibitions. A museum with several forms of exhibition can provide space in the day’s itinerary both for a longer visit and for individual thematic stops.

History

One of the prominent cultural attractions is Kalvária. It comprises twelve symmetrically arranged chapels, a cross and Neo-Baroque statues. Kalvária has been registered as a national cultural monument since 1963. Another historical memorial is the monument to the great plague epidemic of 1740 in Nové Zámky. Kalvária represents religious design and monument preservation, while the plague monument commemorates a momentous event. The chapels, cross and statues form a clearly ordered complex whose design differs from the commemorative function of the plague monument.

Leisure

The Štrand thermal complex in Nové Zámky has nine pools. Its thermal water comes from a 1,506-metre-deep geothermal borehole and reaches 52°C. The complex therefore offers a clearly defined focus for days by the water, while the 019a-Ponitrianska Cycle Route opens up a different form of leisure activity. The cycle route is suitable for recreational cyclists and families with children. It complements days by the water with an outdoor route. Thermal waters and the cycle route thus represent two different forms of activity: one is tied to the complex’s pools, while the other follows a designated route for recreational cycling.

Nature

Southwest of Nové Zámky, Lesopark Berek offers relaxation in a peaceful natural setting. The park has several paved and forest paths. The forest park can be reached across a bridge only on foot or by bicycle; motor vehicles are not permitted to enter. The bridge therefore marks the access point for pedestrians and cyclists, while motor vehicles remain excluded. The combination of different path surfaces and restricted vehicle access shapes how the park is used without limiting the paths to a single mode of transport.
