Nová Vieska is located on the southern edge of the Pohronská pahorkatina hills. The Paríž stream marshes lie to the north, while the ridge of the uplands lies to the south.

Nature

Drieňová hora is a nature reserve covering almost four hectares and extending across the cadastral areas of Nová Vieska and Gbelce. Drieňová hora is home to thermophilous grassland species. They have replaced the downy oak forests that disappeared as a result of human intervention.

Parížske močiare has been designated a Ramsar wetland of international importance since 1990 and a protected bird area since 2008. As early as 1966, the area was designated a national nature reserve covering 184.046 hectares.

The birdlife has been documented through long-term surveys: between 1954 and 2014, a total of 169 bird species were recorded in Parížske močiare. The area is also the only location in Slovakia where a regular and confirmed breeding population of the Moustached Warbler (Acrocephalus melanopogon) has been reliably established. Protective regulations apply to Parížske močiare. Visitors should not disturb the wildlife, leave any waste behind, or pollute the surroundings.

Culture

The Reformed Church of Nová Vieska was originally built in 1787 as a Toleration Church and restored after a fire in 1874. Its hall-like interior has two galleries. The tower and buttresses date from 1874. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose.

The municipal building of Nová Vieska was established as a memorial house to preserve local folk culture. In the building, the former birthplace of Lajos Gulyás, a memorial room dedicated to Lajos Gulyás was established in 2005. In addition, the Csemadok organisation in Nová Vieska is dedicated to preserving folk traditions and organising cultural events.

The town's Hungarian cultural tradition also includes a Hungarian folklore ensemble that preserves Hungarian folk dances and songs. Each year, the ensemble rehearses a new choreography of Hungarian folk dances from various regions and performs at numerous local and international cultural events.

History

Fossilised faunal remains have been found at the Nová Vieska paleontological site, including the last mastodons and the first mammoths. The site is considered one of the most important sites in Central Europe for the transition from the Pliocene to the Pleistocene. It is intended to serve at least as a Slovak stratotype for a new Quaternary boundary. This period dates back approximately 2.6 million years.
