Nána between the Danube, memorials and Vŕšok

Nána lies at the confluence of the Hron and the Danube. The western municipal boundary of Nána extends to the Danube. There are memorials in the village; there is also a lookout tower near Gerendás.

Vŕšok Natural Area

The Vŕšok protected area was established in 1965 to protect rare xerothermophilous flora and fauna. Vŕšok is subject to the fourth level of protection; the area is also part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas. In 2007, the municipality of Nána put up an information board at Vŕšok.

Memorial Culture

The Nána monument to the world wars stands in the village park. It was erected in 1939 in memory of those who fell in the First World War, as well as ten young people who were shot by Czech legionnaires in 1919. On 21 August 2016, a Turul was placed on the monument, an ancient Hungarian symbol. The statue was created by the sculptor vitéz Csák Attila from Páty.

The Nána Trianon memorial stone is also located in the village park; it was erected in 2010 on the 90th anniversary of the Trianon Peace Dictate. Since it was erected, local residents and occasionally people from other places have gathered there every year on the Day of National Cohesion. During anniversary celebrations, wreaths are laid and candles are lit at a memorial site in Nána under the organization of Csemadok.

Csemadok’s annual events programme in Nána has included 15 March since 1991, Heroes’ Day commemorating those who fell in the war, the Trianon commemoration since 2016, the Saint Stephen’s Festival since 2010, the commemoration of the Martyrs of Arad since 1992, and the lighting of candles commemorating the 1956 Revolution since 2006. The Csemadok organization in Nána has erected twelve memorials in the village.

Church and Local History

A memorial column to the right of the church in Nána was erected in 2007 to mark the 850th anniversary of the village’s first written mention. The Kostol sv. Vendelína church was created in 1791 by converting an older Baroque chapel. It is a Neoclassical single-nave church with a roof turret and continues to serve its religious purpose. At the entrance to the church stands the Ősi Magyar Kapu, commemorating Nána’s 855th anniversary in 2012.

Gerendás and the View over the Surroundings

The Gerendás Lookout Tower was built in 2011 above the grounds of the Gerendás guesthouse. From there, it offers a comparatively beautiful view of the surrounding area and, in the background, the panorama of the small Burda Mountains. Štúrovo and the basilica of Esztergom can be seen in the distance. The Gerendás Lookout Tower was designated as freely accessible.

By prior arrangement, Gerendás offers cellar tours with wine tastings of barrel and bottled wines in an atmospheric vaulted cellar.
