Holiday apartment in Kmeťovo: Culture, Nature and Winemaking Tradition

Kmeťovo combines the landscape of the Žitavská pahorkatina with a remarkable stretch of riverine nature and a diverse local culture. The village lies on the right-bank floodplain of the Žitava. East of the built-up area, the river flows in a channel confined by levees, while Žitavský luh preserves the last remnant of the original meandering river course.

Landscape

Žitavský luh is also a breeding and migration area for protected waterfowl. The Žitava Protected Natural Monument safeguards an old channel of the Žitava and its bank vegetation as a valuable biological and landscape feature. Thus, in and around Kmeťovo, the river’s present-day forms meet a preserved section of its former, winding shape.

Culture

The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary is a prominent feature of the village. Built in 1882, the church is a Classicist monument of historical and cultural value. Inside is an almost life-size statue carved from pear wood. A cross with a crucifix, made in Vienna after the First World War, also hangs above the altar.

In 1994, a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Scapular and the three Košice martyrs was added to the church. The chapel contains an altar with a statue of Our Lady of the Scapular as well as a wooden wall relief of the Košice martyrs. The relief was carved by Vašek from Mojzesovo.

Further historical evidence can be found at various locations in the village: The cemetery contains a marble cross from 1914, Kmeťovo has a statue of the Holy Trinity from 1924, and the vineyards contain a statue of Saint Urban from 1874.

Traditions

The statue of Saint Urban points to Kmeťovo’s historic winemaking tradition. It included a devotional gathering held every year on Stara hora on the Sunday after the feast of Saint Urban. Wine-tasting competitions also have a long history in the village; the tradition dates back to 1978.

The traditional annual cycle also included historic Carnival customs, with Carnival celebrations and, in particular, masked balls. Historic Christmas customs included fruit, pupáčky, kapustnica and fish on Christmas Eve.

Routes

The Žitavský luh educational trail is accessible from State Road 511 via the embankment and the Kmeťovo Bridge. On the accessible section, travel is possible only on foot or by bicycle. Another designated connection is the 28-kilometre Kmeťovo–Kolta hiking route, route number 0710; Žitavský luh is reached after 2.7 km on this route.
