Bíňa on the Hron is a place where nature, architectural history and religious heritage exist side by side. Nature

The Hron River and the adjacent floodplain forests in Bíňa belong to the Natura 2000 site of European importance SKUEV0820 Dolný tok Hrona. A prominent natural feature is the Bíňanský loess profile on the bank of the Hron. It is a protected natural monument measuring 5 to 10 metres in height. The profile is considered a rare phenomenon in the Hron catchment area.

Bíňanský rybník also has a designated protection status: the pond is classified as a nature reserve. The protection category serves to protect fauna, flora, habitats and landscapes. Thus, Bíňa is home to both a river and floodplain environment as well as protected geological and water-related areas.

Culture

Remains of the fortifications are visible on the northern edge of Bíňa. Bíňa is also home to the ruins of a monastery built in the 12th century, which was destroyed by the Turks. The village’s traditional heritage also includes the unique folk costumes and cultural traditions of the “short-skirt villages”.

History

The twin-towered Roman Catholic Church of Mary in Bíňa was built before 1217 and was part of a Premonstratensian monastery. It preserves Romanesque and early Gothic elements considered to be of European importance. The building thus combines several historical layers without losing its medieval character.

The name of the nearest bus stop also helps with orientation around the Church of Mary: it is called “Bíňa, Jednota”.

Sacred Art

The Rotunda of the Twelve Apostles holds a special position. It contains rare wall paintings from the early 13th century depicting a group of apostles. Twelve semicircular interior niches symbolise the twelve apostles. Originally a chapel, the building was a Romanesque rotunda with wall paintings from the early 12th century; after 1755, it was renovated in the Baroque style. The rotunda has unique Romanesque, Byzantine-inspired frescoes.

Places of Pilgrimage

Studnička (Kutacska) is a pilgrimage spring in the cadastral area of Bíňa. North of the village, the Bíňa Calvary stands in the former ditch between two rings of the outer earthwork of the medieval fortifications. The architectural complex of the Bíňa Calvary is in good condition and continues to serve its purpose.
