Yaroslavl: City History and Culture
Accommodation in Yaroslavl
Yaroslavl combines a long history with distinctive religious buildings, museums and theatre. Since the 11th century, it has developed into an important trading centre. Those planning a trip around culture and history can choose different areas of focus, from churches and a monastery to insights into local history, collections and a visit to the Strelka.
Historic Buildings and City History
Among Yaroslavl’s oldest surviving stone buildings are the Transfiguration Cathedral, the Holy Gates and the Refectory Chamber; the lower tier of the bell tower is also included. These buildings are more than 500 years old. The Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery was founded in the 12th century by Prince Konstantin Vsevolodovich. Between 1550 and 1580, it developed into a powerful fortress.
The Dormition Cathedral is considered one of the city’s oldest churches. In the 2000s, it was rebuilt with white-stone walls and golden domes. This brings together different historical perspectives in Yaroslavl: early stone buildings, a former monastery with the character of a fortress, and a cathedral whose present form dates from a more recent reconstruction.
The Volkov Theatre is also part of the city’s history: founded in 1750, it is Russia’s first professional theatre. Those who would rather focus on local everyday life and urban history can find another perspective at the Museum of City History.
Museums: From City Life to Music
The Museum of City History of Yaroslavl was founded about a quarter of a century ago at the initiative of engaged local residents and is intended for the city’s residents and visitors. It occupies three buildings in the historic centre. In the Kuznetsov House, original room layouts and staircases have been preserved, along with living rooms and reception halls. The interiors provide a tangible architectural setting for a museum visit, while the focus on city history turns attention to Yaroslavl’s development.
The museum’s programmes include a range of ways to take part. In one programme, visitors can act out a traditional matchmaking scene and learn more about this wedding custom. Another explores historical games, including a “merchant’s” forfeits game, an encounter with fairground comedians and an edifying tale, followed by the game “Babki” in the museum park. In the “Introduction to the People of Yaroslavl” programme, children act out a legend about the city’s founding, taking the roles of the prince, the bear and his followers. Check current dates for these programmes with the museum.
The “Music and Time” Museum offers a contrast to city history. Its grounds host three exhibitions: “Music and Time”, Russian and foreign porcelain from the late 19th to the 20th century, and Kasli cast iron and samovars. The collection of historical musical instruments and mechanisms includes gramophones and cylinder gramophones, harmoniums, music boxes and barrel organs. It also includes wall, table, floor, mantel and carriage clocks, as well as irons. The selection brings together music and mechanics with objects from everyday life.
Those interested in space travel can visit a planetarium, an observatory and the “History of Cosmonautics” Museum at the V. V. Tereshkova Cultural and Educational Centre. Yaroslavl thus offers a wide range of museum subjects, from urban development and historical collections to space exploration.
The Strelka and the Embankment
Yaroslavl’s Strelka is considered the place where the city’s history began. During the day, you can hear the “singing” fountains; in the evening, there is a light and music show. If you plan to catch either of these experiences, check the current times in advance. The Museum Embankment begins roughly at the Kotorosl Embankment and offers another point of reference when planning your city itinerary.
Choose a Holiday Apartment That Suits Your Itinerary
Which focus suits your trip depends on what you want to experience in Yaroslavl: historic buildings and city history, the collections at “Music and Time”, the space centre, or the theatre and Strelka. When choosing a holiday apartment, it makes sense to compare the locations of specific listings with the places you actually want to visit. That way, your own itinerary can guide your choice rather than a general idea of the best base.
