Shchelkanka is the destination for your vacation rental search; the following cultural and natural attractions are located across Yaroslavl Oblast, in various towns. They range from churches and historic ensembles to museums with hands-on activities and a zone for sailing. When planning your trip, first choose the themes and places that interest you most, then compare them with the location of your accommodation.

Churches, Monasteries, and City History

In Yaroslavl, the ensemble of the former Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery and several significant churches are part of the region’s cultural landscape. The monastery was founded in the 13th century. Architectural monuments and paintings associated with 17th-century Yaroslavl architecture include the churches of the Prophet Elijah, John Chrysostom, John the Baptist, St. Nicholas Nadein, the Nativity of Christ, and the Epiphany. The Metropolitan’s Chambers offer a different perspective: built in 1682, the building houses a department of Old Russian art, as well as exhibitions and exhibition halls. The exhibitions and permanent display feature more than 500 works of icon painting; this number may change.

Pereslavl-Zalessky combines early architectural history with museum collections. The Transfiguration Cathedral dates back to the 12th century and is considered the city’s oldest church and the earliest surviving architectural monument of the Vladimir-Suzdal school. At the Goritsky Monastery of the Dormition, the passage gates in the eastern wall are considered an example of 17th-century Russian architecture; most visitors enter the monastery through them. The city’s Historical, Architectural, and Art Museum-Reserve was founded in 1918 and opened to visitors on May 28, 1919.

In Uglich, the Kremlin comprises a historic ensemble dating from the 15th to the 19th centuries. It includes the Princes’ Chambers, the Church of Tsarevich Dmitry, and the former City Duma building, which houses museum exhibitions. The Transfiguration Cathedral includes a bell tower and is Uglich’s main active place of worship. The 33,560 m² complex is located in the city center and brings together architectural monuments and an extensive park with a pond and moat. Trees dating from the 19th and 20th centuries define the park, which is also considered a testament to landscape gardening and design from the second half to the end of the 19th century.

Museums to Explore and Experience

In Rostov, the Rostov Kremlin State Museum-Reserve is located in the architectural ensemble of the former Bishops’ Court. This ensemble was created through the building projects of Metropolitan Jonah III (Sysoevich) in the 1670s and 1680s. Museum offerings include an exhibition on Rostov finift (enamel). In Rybinsk, the Museum-Reserve is housed in the New Grain Exchange building. Moscow architect A. V. Ivanov designed the building, which was constructed on the high bank of the Volga in 1912.

The N. M. Alekseev Museum of the Mologa Region in Rybinsk offers tours of its galleries and interactive activities. These include “Bazarnyy den” and “Remeslu vezde pochyot,” with contests, prizes, and refreshments. Check current dates directly with the museum. The “Na Rostovskoy” Museum Center in Pereslavl-Zalessky holds at least 30 exhibitions by contemporary artists each year.

The regional program also includes hands-on art activities: at the Emalis Enamel Art Museum in Yaroslavl, visitors can learn about the history of the craft, see works by Russian and European artists, and make a pendant or a picture themselves. Ask the museum about current workshop arrangements. The Kukushka Locomotive Museum in Talitsy displays carriages, locomotives, railway equipment, and automobiles dating from the late 19th century to the first half of the 20th century.

Lake, Sailing, and Special Collections

On the northeastern shore of Lake Pleshcheyevo, the park has a designated zone for sailing that is open to visitors. Check local operating conditions before your trip. In Veskovo, the “Peter I’s Boat” Museum-Estate preserves the boat Fortuna, which is part of its permanent exhibition. It is considered a unique monument to Russian military shipbuilding and is described as Pereslavl’s main attraction. The museum-estate also offers the guided entertainment program “Petrovskaya Assambleya ‘Vekov azartnaya igra’”; ask the museum about current arrangements.

When choosing a vacation rental in Shchelkanka, it helps to organize your trip around the interests you want to focus on: architecture and icon painting, temporary exhibitions, interactive museum activities, or sailing. The attractions listed are in different towns across Yaroslavl Oblast. Before deciding where to stay, compare the places you plan to visit with the location of your accommodation.
