Breytovsky District combines Breytovo’s local history with distinctive natural landmarks. A dedicated room in the Breytovsky Local History Museum focuses on crafts and the linen trade; an excursion through Breytovo combines village history with a walk along the promenade on the Rybinsk Reservoir. For your trip, you can choose between nature, the museum and a guided introduction to the village.

Pine forests and a small birch grove

A regional regulation from 2017 lists Prozorovsky Pine Forest, covering 67.1675 hectares, and the pine forest on Parkovaya Street, covering 13.3389 hectares, as natural landmarks of regional significance in Breytovsky District. The birch grove in the village of Breytovo is also listed; it covers 0.502 hectares. In terms of size, Prozorovsky Pine Forest is just over five times as large as the forest on Parkovaya Street, while the birch grove measures about half a hectare. Thus, the designated natural areas include two pine forests of different sizes and a small grove. If you would like to include one of these natural landmarks in your itinerary, check in advance whether it can be visited and under what conditions.

Linen crafts and the history of Breytovo

The local history museum’s exhibits include a loom, numerous spinning wheels, shuttles and flax fibres, as well as embroidered towels and shirts. Together, these objects illustrate the craft of the linen trade, from raw materials and tools to textile products. The exhibitions also tell the history of the Breytovsky area and the village of Breytovo. The museum therefore offers both a regional historical perspective and a close look at specific objects from the textile craft tradition.

The village’s history also includes two churches that stood in Breytovo before the area was flooded by the Rybinsk Sea: the Church of St John the Baptist, built in 1767, and the Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God, built in 1887. Both were destroyed during the construction of the Rybinsk Reservoir. Construction of a new church in Breytovo in honour of the Nativity of St John the Baptist began in autumn 2010. It was intended to succeed the destroyed church and continue its traditions. The dates thus mark different periods in the village’s history, without equating the former churches with the later construction project.

Tours and museum activities

The local history museum offers guided tours of the village of Breytovo, where participants learn about its history, both past and present. The excursion includes a walk along the promenade on the Rybinsk Reservoir and a visit to a monument to the first tractor. The monument is part of the museum programme. Check the tour dates with the organiser before making firm plans for your visit.

The museum also hosts exhibitions, workshops, museum programmes and guided tours for adults and children. The exhibitions offer insight into the history of the area and the village; workshops and programmes complement this with other types of activities. You can combine a museum visit with a guided exploration of Breytovo, if the dates fit your trip.

Choose a vacation rental based on your planned visits

If Breytovo’s village history and local history museum are your main focus, you can tailor your search for a vacation rental in Breytovsky District around your planned visit to Breytovo. Nature enthusiasts can also consider the two named pine forests and the birch grove as potential destinations of their own; check access in advance. If you are planning a guided excursion, check the current dates with the organiser as well.
