Rossosch brings together church architecture, nature-related attractions and an unusual exhibition scene. The Alexander Nevsky Church was built in 1876 to a design by Moscow architect P. P. Burenin as a bell tower for the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross, which was 42 years older. The bell tower of St. Elijah Cathedral makes a different impression: it holds ten bells weighing between 4 and 1,200 kilograms each. The churches therefore offer two different perspectives: architectural history with a clearly stated date, and a specific detail about a cathedral’s fittings.

Churches, nature and unusual exhibitions

The route “Gorod Rossosch dlya semeynogo otdykha” leads to the Alexander Nevsky Church and the Rossosch Local History Museum. It also includes the “Kayalov Bor” Ecopark and memorial sites, as well as a walk along the ecological trail with an introduction to local flora and fauna. If you are considering this route for your stay, check the current visiting arrangements for each stop before you go.

The ecopark is in the western part of Rossosch. Its 3.5-kilometer themed trail introduces visitors to events from “The Tale of Igor’s Campaign.” The park thus brings together nature-related themes and a literary trail. The walk offers a different way to experience Rossosch from looking at its church architecture and bells, while the route also provides a specific focus for a stroll.

The “Molochnye Berega” complex offers an unusual exhibition theme: it includes 180 cows from the “CowParade” art project. This collection adds a distinctive note alongside the city’s religious and landscape themes. Check current visiting arrangements directly with the venue before planning a visit to the exhibition complex.

If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Rossosch, you can use your interests to help plan your stay: are you especially interested in churches and architectural history, a walk focused on nature and literature, or the CowParade exhibition?

More places to explore in Voronezh Oblast

Voronezh Oblast also offers a range of nature and cultural experiences. The Khopyor Nature Reserve extends across the Novokhopersky, Povorinsky and Gribanovsky administrative districts. Two tours differ in their mode of transport and duration: the five-kilometer “Legendy Khopra” walking tour takes three hours and is closed during the spring flood; the 26-kilometer “Tur de Khopyor” cycling tour takes four hours. You can compare the stated distances and durations when choosing a walk or a bike ride.

The Nature Museum in the Khopyor Reserve has two halls showcasing the reserve’s wildlife and habitats. The exhibitions cover, among other things, beavers, the Russian desman, water-dwelling and predatory birds, as well as wild boar, moose, fallow deer and red deer; there is also a large relief map of the reserve. Check visitor arrangements before you arrive.

The “Divnogorye” Museum-Reserve is known for its chalk landscapes, with unusual cliffs on steep slopes and large, ridge-like chalk ravines. Divnogorskiy Canyon is about one kilometer long and up to 200 meters wide. The same regional cultural heritage also includes Stone Age settlements, the ruins of the medieval Mayatskaya Fortress, and six ritual caves and cave complexes. These are carved into the chalk massif on the right bank of the Tikhaya Sosna and Don rivers and extend for about 8.5 kilometers. The “Paleoliticheskie masterskie” recreate the Stone Age and host workshops on making stone tools.

Another major archaeological site in the oblast is the “Kostenki” Museum-Reserve. The Archaeology Museum building completely covers a Stone Age settlement site. The museum-reserve includes 25 protected zones with about 60 Upper Paleolithic sites and covers an area of nine hectares. The region therefore offers different ways of exploring the past: a covered settlement site at Kostenki and, at Divnogorye, both settlements and medieval ruins and caves.
