A direct way to explore Podgorenskiy’s history is to visit the district’s local history museum. Its four halls are devoted to history, the pre-war period, the glory of battle, and the present day. This layout alone gives an impression of how different periods sit side by side in the museum.

The history hall’s collection includes a model of a peasant house, objects found during archaeological excavations, a working loom, and historical everyday objects and clothing. The topics therefore range from housing and crafts to items of daily life. The museum also preserves personal belongings and photographs of soldiers who liberated Podgorenskiy District from the German occupiers, as well as people from the region who died in Afghanistan and the Chechen Republic.

The local history museum opened on January 16, 1983, on the 40th anniversary of the liberation of Podgorenskiy District from the German occupiers. The date connects the museum’s history with a specific chapter in local history; alongside this, the collections focus on everyday life and remembrance.

Nature and Culture in Voronezh Oblast

Voronezh Oblast also offers a range of nature and cultural attractions. The territory of Khoper Nature Reserve extends across the Novokhopersky, Povorinsky, and Gribanovsky administrative districts. When choosing between two tours described there, both the activity and the time required are relevant: the “Legends of the Khoper” hiking tour is five kilometers long and takes three hours; it is closed during spring floods. The “Tour de Khoper” cycling tour covers 26 kilometers and takes four hours. The stated distances and durations make it easy to compare hiking and cycling. Bear the hiking route’s seasonal closure in mind when planning.

The reserve’s natural history museum offers another perspective. Its two halls cover the area’s wildlife and habitats: the exhibitions feature beavers, Russian desmans, water-dwelling and predatory birds, as well as wild boar, moose, fallow deer, and red deer. A large relief map of the reserve complements the exhibits. If you are planning a visit, check the museum’s visitor regulations beforehand.

The Divnogorye Museum-Reserve offers a contrasting landscape. It is known for chalk landscapes with unusual rock formations on steep slopes and large, ridge-like chalk ravines. Divnogorskiy Canyon is about one kilometer long and up to 200 meters wide. Six cult caves and cave complexes are carved into the chalk massif on the right bank of the Tikhaya Sosna and Don rivers, stretching for about 8.5 kilometers. The reserve’s historical heritage also includes Stone Age settlements and the ruins of the medieval Mayatskaya Fortress.

The “Paleolithic Workshops” at Divnogorye recreate the Stone Age and host workshops on making stone tools. The Kostenki Museum-Reserve offers another archaeological focus: its museum building completely covers a Stone Age settlement site. The area covers nine hectares and includes 25 protected zones with about 60 Upper Paleolithic sites. The two places therefore offer different points of interest: a reconstructed workshop with stone-tool workshops at one, and a covered settlement site and numerous archaeological sites at the other.
