Near Krinitsa, several natural areas show how varied steppe landscapes can be. The Shlepchino natural area protects a Lessing’s feather-grass steppe with semi-desert plant communities on saline soils, as well as Schrenck’s tulip. Berestovoe offers a different focus: its steppe slopes are protected, and snakehead tulips and Schrenck’s tulips grow there.

Steppes and Protected Areas near Krinitsa

Shlepchino covers 200 hectares and was designated a natural monument on January 21, 1969. The area is also an example of relict vegetation from the semi-desert zone in the southeast of Voronezh Oblast. The distinctive combination of feather-grass steppe, semi-desert plant communities, and saline soil gives the protected area a specific botanical profile. For finding your way around the plants, the difference from Berestovoe is useful: Schrenck’s tulip is mentioned for both natural areas, while the snakehead tulip is mentioned for Berestovoe.

Pomelovskaya Balka is also near Krinitsa and covers eight hectares. Khrypun Steppe, in turn, is considered the last untouched landscape of mixed-grass, fescue, and feather-grass steppe in the Central Black Earth Region. Together, these places offer different points of interest for nature lovers: protected plant communities at Shlepchino and Berestovoe, a named balka (ravine), and the broader steppe landscape of Khrypun. This can help you begin choosing a holiday rental by deciding which landscape you want to make the focus of your trip.

More Nature and Cultural Experiences in Voronezh Oblast

In the wider destination of Voronezh Oblast, the territory of the Khopyor Nature Reserve extends across the Novokhopersky, Povorinsky, and Gribanovsky administrative districts. There, the “Legends of the Khopyor” walking tour covers five kilometers and takes three hours; the route closes during spring floods. The “Tour de Khopyor” cycling tour is 26 kilometers long and takes four hours. Comparing the two makes their different durations and ways of getting around clear without equating them.

The Khopyor Nature Reserve also has a nature museum with two halls. Its exhibits cover the reserve’s wildlife and habitats, including beavers, the Russian desman, aquatic and predatory birds, as well as wild boar, moose, fallow deer, and red deer. A large relief map shows the reserve as a whole. If you plan to visit the museum, check the visitor regulations before your trip.

The Divnogorye Museum-Reserve in Voronezh Oblast offers a different landscape: its scenery is defined by chalk cliffs on steep slopes and large, ridge-like chalk ravines. Divnogorsky Canyon is about one kilometer long and up to 200 meters wide. The chalk massif on the right bank of the Tikhaya Sosna and Don rivers also contains six sacred caves and cave complexes, extending for about 8.5 kilometers. These regional nature and cultural experiences offer a very different landscape focus from the steppes near Krinitsa.
