Yasenki combines local history with a park and a local cultural landmark. The Severtsov family estate and the Church of the Dormition both date back to the 19th century. The Yasenki Cultural Centre is also home to the Yasenki vocal ensemble. These features give the place a clear cultural and historical focus and help you decide whether Yasenki matches your travel interests.

Estate, Church and Local History

The Severtsov family estate is the oldest building in Yasenki. The Church of the Dormition is also located in the village and dates back to the 19th century. The two buildings represent different aspects of local history: the historic estate and the church. Those interested in these topics will find more than one point of interest to explore.

Several people and life stories are associated with the Petrovskoye estate. It was home to Guard Colonel and participant in the Battle of Borodino A. P. Severtsov (1789–1871), as well as N. A. and A. N. Severtsov. The biologist S. A. Severtsov (1891–1947), the artist N. A. Severtsova (1901–1970), and the art historian A. G. Gabrichevsky (1901–1970) also spent time there. Their varied fields of work give the estate’s history a broader cultural and scientific dimension.

The Yasenki vocal ensemble, which is affiliated with the Yasenki Cultural Centre, is part of local cultural life. Yasenki also won a competition for the most beautiful village in Voronezh Oblast. The park has a children’s playground and health trails; a 2021 description mentions these facilities. Check their current condition before visiting.

More Nature and Culture in Voronezh Oblast

The wider travel destination of Voronezh Oblast offers a variety of other landscape and cultural attractions. At the Khopyor Nature Reserve, the time and distance involved in two excursions can be compared directly: the “Legends of Khopyor” walking excursion is 5 kilometres long and takes three hours. This route is closed during the spring flood. The “Tour de Khopyor” cycling tour covers 26 kilometres and takes four hours. This means you can choose between a shorter walk and a longer cycling tour, each requiring its own time plan.

The Nature Museum at Khopyor Nature Reserve displays the reserve’s wildlife and habitats in two halls. Exhibits include beavers, the Russian desman, water-dwelling and predatory birds, as well as wild boar, elk, fallow deer and red deer. A large relief map also depicts the reserve. Check the museum’s visitor regulations before your visit.

The Divnogorye Museum-Reserve offers a different focus, with chalk landscapes, archaeological sites and cave complexes. Steep slopes are lined with unusual chalk formations and large, ridge-like chalk ravines. The Divnogorsky Canyon is about one kilometre long and up to 200 metres wide. Six sacred caves and cave complexes have been carved into the chalk massif on the right bank of the Tikhaya Sosna and Don rivers, stretching for about 8.5 kilometres. The reserve’s historical heritage also includes Stone Age settlements and the ruins of the medieval Mayatskaya fortress. The “Paleolithic Workshops” recreate the Stone Age and offer workshops on making stone tools.

Another regional history attraction is the Khrenovskoy Stud Farm in the southeast of Voronezh Oblast. It is considered the birthplace of the Orlov Trotter and Russia’s oldest stud farm. Count Alexei Grigoryevich Orlov-Chesmensky founded it on 24 October 1776. Visitors can see Orlov Trotters and explore the old stables and modern horse boxes. Daily tours must be arranged in advance; coordinate your visit with the operator before travelling. The Horse Breeding Museum displays old breeding books, the pedigree of the Orlov Trotter breed, and horse blankets, cups and medals won by the stud’s horses at racetracks in Russia and abroad.

When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to decide on your preferred focus first: would you like to centre your stay on Yasenki itself, with its local history and park, or are you planning your trip around another destination in Voronezh Oblast?
