Totemsky District: Museums, Village History and Rubtsov
Accommodation in Totemsky District
The cultural offerings in Totemsky District range from village and literary history to archaeological and monastic heritage. They come particularly vividly to life at individual sites: a former hospital building tells the story of its changing uses; museums focus on the poet Nikolai Rubtsov and one of his poems; and an archaeological settlement site takes you back to the 13th century. These varied themes can help you plan your cultural trip around your interests. When looking for a holiday apartment, you might start by deciding whether you want to focus primarily on village history, literature or historic buildings.
Museums and Life Stories
The “Zhuravli” Museum is in the village of Nikolskoye, in the “House on Stone Pillars,” a former zemstvo hospital building. A guided tour of the house explores its history. It was first a barracks building for the zemstvo hospital; later, it served as an isolation ward for the district hospital, a children’s home for children from surrounding villages, an agricultural business office and, finally, the “Zhuravli” Museum. The building’s changing uses provide a narrative thread: the focus is not just on an institution, but on the changing history of a house.
The Nikolai Rubtsov Museum in Nikolskoye brings together village history and biographical themes: it presents Rubtsov’s childhood in the children’s home, his life story and themes related to the history of the village. It also features the ethnographic exhibition “Po sledam minovavshikh vremyon.” Numerous original objects associated with the poet make the collection itself a key focus, alongside the biographical themes.
Guided tours are also available in Nikolskoye, visiting private and school museums as well as the Church of St. Nicholas. The church is described as being under reconstruction. These additional stops complement the museum visits with different forms of local history.
Literary Commemoration and an Annual Festival
The museum dedicated to the poem “Russkiy ogonyok” in Anikin Pochinok welcomes visitors only by prior arrangement for a guided tour. Be sure to confirm the date before you travel. About half of the exhibits at the “Russkiy ogonyok” Museum are originals that once belonged to Maria Bogdanova. Their approximate proportion and former ownership give the collection its own biographical thread.
The “Rubtsovskiy kostyor” festival is celebrated annually from late July to early August. It includes poetry evenings around a campfire on the banks of the Tolshma. If you plan to attend the festival, check the dates in advance.
Archaeological and Regional Perspectives
The archaeological settlement site of Staro-Totemskoe gorodishche in Neklyudikha dates back to the 13th century. Another historical landmark is the ensemble of the Spaso-Sumorin Monastery: it dates from the 18th and 19th centuries and lies on the outskirts of Totma. Together, these two examples highlight different periods, from a medieval settlement site to a monastery complex from more recent centuries.
The Northern Dvina Water System runs through “Russkiy Sever” National Park. Built in 1825–1828, it comprises five artificial canals and seven locks; the water system is navigable. Alongside village, museum and architectural history, the region’s water engineering heritage in Vologda Oblast is another subject to explore.
