Wolzhsky offers an unusually concentrated look at different chapters of history: from prehistoric finds and everyday objects to the remembrance of war and the history of puppet theatre. Those wishing to make culture the focus of their trip will find several distinct themes here, which can easily be organised according to personal interests.

Museums from the Bronze Age to the culture of remembrance

The Volzhsky Historical and Local History Museum has a permanent exhibition devoted to archaeology. On display are the remains of prehistoric animals and a reconstruction of a Bronze Age Srubna-culture burial. Another permanent exhibition, entitled “The History of the Village of Verkhnyaya Akhtuba”, features original everyday objects, tools and clothing belonging to residents of the village of Besrodnoye. Traces reaching far back in time are thus presented alongside objects from daily life. The exhibition on the construction of the Volga Hydroelectric Power Station focuses on a major 20th-century construction project.

The Museum of Remembrance of War Soldiers and Law Enforcement Officers also presents a range of different themes. The exhibition “Transvolga During the Great Patriotic War” covers topics including the construction of the railway during the war, as well as artillery, aviation, the navy and medicine in Transvolga. It also explores the history of the village of Besrodnoye and displays documents, letters and memories of participants in the Battle of Stalingrad. The museum’s exhibits include a wartime dugout, weapons and decorations, as well as uniforms worn by participants in the battle and law enforcement officers. Exhibition details may change, so check what is currently on offer before visiting.

The museum runs the historical-patriotic game “19-54” for school pupils and students. It combines elements of a guided tour with a historical quest about local history. This makes it different from a conventional exhibition visit. If you would like to include the game in your plans, check its current availability directly with the museum.

Art and puppet theatre

The Volzhsky Art Gallery displays historical paintings in the style of Socialist Realism, as well as works by post-war artists known as the “Sixtiers”. The puppet theatre adds a history of its own to this cultural perspective: on 5 December 1990, the Volzhsky City Council decided to establish a municipal puppet theatre. In the mid-1990s, the Arlekin theatre settled permanently in the former Energetik cinema building. Thousands of performances have been held there since then; however, this does not indicate what is on the programme today.

This cultural focus can be a useful starting point when choosing a holiday apartment: consider whether collections, history and theatre are what make Wolzhsky the right destination for you. The museums range from archaeology and local everyday history to art and the remembrance of war, while the history of Arlekin offers a distinct perspective on the town’s cultural life.

More perspectives in Volgograd Oblast

The wider destination of Volgograd Oblast offers additional, distinct cultural and landscape themes. In Pyatimorsk, the Park of the History of the Russian State was established in 2012, the year of the 60th anniversary of the opening of the Volga–Don Canal. It lies on the banks of the navigable canal and includes an avenue of the Great Patriotic War with busts of generals, marshals and Generalissimo I. V. Stalin. In Volgograd, meanwhile, the Battle of Stalingrad Panorama Museum has eight halls with exhibits from the period of the Great Patriotic War, as well as four painted dioramas depicting episodes from the battle.

The architecture offers a different focus: the Old Sarepta Museum-Reserve is an ensemble in the Saxon Baroque style, with 26 buildings dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. Nature lovers, in turn, will find other themes to explore. Lake Elton lies in the east of Volgograd Oblast and, at 152 km², is Europe’s largest salt lake. The lake and surrounding areas have been designated a specially protected natural area since 2001; Elton Nature Park was also established at the same time. Donskoy Nature Park offers walks along tourist routes and ecological trails, as well as kayaking on the Don and Ilovlya rivers. These regional examples are in Volgograd Oblast and are not features of Wolzhsky itself.
