Pallasovka: Monuments and Memorial Sites
Accommodation in Pallasovka
Pallasovka can be explored through its monuments, which span several historical periods. The station forecourt and city park provide distinct settings for different memorial sites. An inscription on the P. S. Pallas monument leads from the history of the station to an 18th-century geographical expedition and the Elton and Baskunchak lakes. This raises a clear question for planning your trip: should the town’s monuments be the main focus, or are you also interested in the broader nature and cultural themes of Volgograd Oblast?
Memorial Sites in Pallasovka
The monument to P. S. Pallas was erected in September 1989 on Pallasovka’s station forecourt. It stands 100 metres from the station building. Its inscription records that the station was named after Pallas in 1904. It also states that a geographical expedition led by him surveyed the area of Lakes Elton and Baskunchak in 1773. The monument thus brings together two points in time: the naming of the station and the earlier expedition, as described in the inscription.
The monuments in the city park highlight other historical themes. “Ogon Slavy” (Flame of Glory) honours local soldiers who died during the Civil War and the Great Patriotic War. The “Skorb materi” (A Mother’s Grief) monument stands on the park’s central path. It commemorates Soviet Army soldiers who died in 1942 when a medical train and a hospital at Pallasovka station were bombed. The sculptural memorial was erected at the mass grave in 1988. The two memorial sites therefore differ in whom they commemorate: one honours those who fell in two wars, while the other is dedicated to the victims of a specific attack on the medical train and hospital.
Cultural and Landscape Themes in Volgograd Oblast
The wider destination of Volgograd Oblast offers other cultural themes. In Pyatimorsk, the Park of the History of the Russian State was founded in 2012, the year marking the 60th anniversary of the opening of the Volga–Don Canal. It lies on the banks of the navigable canal and includes an avenue of the Great Patriotic War with busts of generals, marshals and Generalissimo I. V. Stalin. The Staraya Sarepta Museum Reserve in Volgograd offers a different architectural setting: the ensemble, in the Saxon Baroque style, comprises 26 buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. The “Battle of Stalingrad” Panorama Museum, also in Volgograd, has eight halls with exhibits from the Great Patriotic War and four painted dioramas depicting episodes from the battle.
The landscapes of Volgograd Oblast offer their own highlights. Lake Elton lies in the eastern part of the oblast and, at 152 km², is Europe’s largest salt lake. Since 2001, the lake and surrounding areas have been designated a specially protected natural area; Elton Nature Park was established at the same time. In Shcherbakovsky Nature Park, the areas known as “Volga Switzerland” lie on a plateau along the banks of the Volga. The broad Shcherbakovskaya Gorge is characterised by forests, flowers and grasses. In marked contrast is Tsimlyansky Sands Nature Park, a sandy massif in the Chernyshevsky District of Volgograd Oblast.
For active outdoor experiences, Donskoy Nature Park offers hiking on tourist routes and eco-trails, as well as kayaking on the Don and Ilovlya rivers. Volgograd Oblast therefore brings together a variety of attractions: a salt lake, a vegetation-covered gorge, a sandy massif and activities on rivers. These examples are located across the region and broaden the picture beyond Pallasovka’s memorial sites.
