Kamyshinsky District is characterised by unusual rock formations and distinctive natural areas. The Ushi Hills are particularly impressive: two hard-rock elevations, 40 to 60 metres high, with caves and cliffs. Imprints of ancient plants can be seen on blocks of silicified sandstone. Since 1980, the Ushi Hills have been natural monuments of republican significance.

Rock Formations, Canyon and Volga Bend

A canyon runs through the central part of Shcherbakovsky Nature Park, with the Shcherbakovka River flowing through it. Together, the canyon and river create a striking feature in the landscape. The Shcherbakovskaya Bend of the Volga offers a different connection with nature: it has the status of an internationally important bird area. Local attractions in Kamyshinsky District also include the Stolbichi Cliffs.

The natural features range from the stone formations of the Ushi Hills to river landscapes and the ornithological significance of the Volga Bend. Those interested in how landscapes form and what makes them distinctive will find a variety of perspectives, rather than just a single rock formation taking centre stage.

Nature Park and Excursion Destinations

During the 2023 tourist season, staff at Shcherbakovsky Nature Park set up ecological trails and green rest areas, and organised environmental education events, ecotours and excursions. A report published by the district administration in 2025 describes how the Shcherbakovskaya izlyuchina Volgi visitor centre offered guests to Kamyshinsky District excursions to Urakov Hill, Danilovsky Canyon and Shcherbakovskaya Balka. If you are planning one of these excursions, check in advance what is currently available.

Architecture and History

There are also clearly defined cultural and historical themes beyond the landscape. The German church in the village of Nizhnyaya Dobrinka was designated a regional architectural monument in 1996. Urakov Hill is a natural and historical monument. The district therefore brings together natural features, a historic church and a hill with both natural and historical significance.

Other Perspectives in Volgograd Oblast

Further landscape and cultural themes can be found elsewhere in Volgograd Oblast. In the village of Pyatimorsk, the Park of the History of the Russian State was founded in 2012, the year of the 60th anniversary of the opening of the Volga–Don Canal. It lies on the bank of the navigable Volga–Don Canal and includes an avenue dedicated to the Great Patriotic War, with busts of generals, marshals and Generalissimo I. V. Stalin.

In Volgograd, the Old Sarepta Museum Reserve features an architectural ensemble in the Saxon Baroque style, with 26 buildings dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. The Battle of Stalingrad Panorama Museum comprises eight halls with exhibits from the Great Patriotic War and four painted dioramas depicting episodes from the battle. Lake Elton in the east of the oblast offers a different regional landscape: at 152 km², it is Europe’s largest salt lake. Since 2001, the lake and surrounding areas have been designated a specially protected natural area; Elton Nature Park was established at the same time. Activities offered at Donskoy Nature Park include hiking on tourist routes and ecological trails, as well as kayaking on the Don and Ilovlya rivers.

When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to decide on your travel priorities first: Kamyshinsky District centres on rock formations, canyons, nature park features and individual cultural sites. The other examples within Volgograd Oblast offer different regional interests.
