Kovrov: Museums, Crafts and City History
Accommodation in Kovrov
Kovrov reveals its cultural side on several levels: through exhibitions about the region and the city, a craft tradition, and churches and memorial sites. This makes the city interesting if you are looking for different ways to explore history and culture during your stay. From interactive programmes and historical collections to architecture, not only do the subjects vary, but so does the way you can engage with them.
Museums spanning regional and city history
Since 2018, the open-air exhibition “Museum Courtyard” has been located on the grounds of the Museum of Nature and Ethnography. Its interactive ethnological and ecological programmes explore the history of the region and its folk traditions. The museum courtyard therefore brings together nature and ethnology alongside regional history. The Kovrov Historical Memorial Museum focuses on different themes: it presents three historical exhibitions about the Kovrov region from prehistoric times to the 9th century, the county town at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, and “Forever in the People’s Memory.”
Kovrov’s motorcycle manufacturing is another chapter in the city’s history. The Museum of Kovrov Motorcycles and Motorsport opened in August 2018 in the Kovrovets Ice Palace; its exhibition tells the story of this motorcycle manufacturing industry. At the V. A. Degtyarev Memorial House Museum, an exhibition room documents the design and professional work of V. A. Degtyarev, V. G. Fyodorov and other developers of weapons for the ground forces, air force and navy. The range therefore extends from city and technology history to the lives of individual developers.
Crafts and experiences at the Hare Museum
Kovrov pottery toys were revived on the basis of deeply rooted traditions in the Kovrov region and recognized as a Russian folk art craft. Workshops on making and painting clay toys are offered at the Kovrov Pottery Toys factory. If you would like to include a workshop in your plans, check availability in advance.
The Hare Museum adds a playful touch. Its collection comprises nearly 2,000 objects: hare figures made from various materials, as well as photographs, drawings and engravings. Children play with the hares there, and staff put on performances, including a puppet show about Koska the Hare. This sets the museum apart from exhibitions on city and technology history, with its combination of a collection and performances. If you are planning your visit around a particular performance, check the current programme beforehand.
Churches and historic memorial sites
The churches also offer distinct architectural and historical features. The Transfiguration Cathedral in Kovrov is a five-domed brick church in the pseudo-Russian style. The Church of the Feodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God is in the centre of Kovrov. The Nativity Cathedral is an Orthodox church dating from the late 18th century and is one of the city’s most important shrines. Their architectural forms, central location and historical context offer different ways to explore the city.
The Ioanno-Voinsky Necropolis Historical Memorial Park is an open-air museum exhibition on the grounds of an old cemetery, where people were buried from the 15th century until the end of the 1920s. The park contains the grave of weapons designer V. A. Degtyarev, who was buried there on January 20, 1949. The history of the cemetery grounds and the later grave give this memorial site a distinctive span of time.
Events and travel planning
More and more concerts and festivals are held each year in V. A. Degtyarev Park; its amusement rides are also in operation. If a particular programme or the rides are important to your plans, check the latest information beforehand, as details may change.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Kovrov, the kind of cultural experience you want can also be a helpful starting point: exhibitions and architecture offer different highlights from interactive programmes, workshops or performances. This lets you consider which themes you want your stay to centre on without committing to a fixed itinerary.
