Shcherbinino: Traces of a Long Church History
Accommodation in Shcherbinino
Shcherbinino tells its story in a place where a monastery once stood and the Nativity Church of the Mother of God was later built. The timeline spans monastic life in the 15th century through a solemn consecration in 2025. The community museum “Kladovaya pamyati” is also part of the town’s cultural landscape. Visitors planning a trip can focus on the history of the church and the town.
From a Monastery Site to the Nativity Church
In the 15th century, a Boris and Gleb Monastery with six residents and a wooden church stood on the site of today’s Nativity Church. During the Polish-Lithuanian intervention in the Time of Troubles, the monastery was looted and destroyed in the early 17th century. The story of the later church building therefore begins at a place that had already been shaped by religious life.
In 1740, the Nativity Church of the Mother of God was built on the site of the destroyed monastery. It was initially made of wood on a stone foundation; later, a stone church with two heated side chapels was built. The building underwent extensive reconstruction from 1859 to 1862. These stages make the development of the building easy to follow: the early wooden church was followed by a stone structure and, later, a larger reconstruction.
A more recent milestone took place on June 29, 2025. On that day, Metropolitan Amvrosy of Tver and Kashin solemnly consecrated the church and its two altars. The main altar is dedicated to the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God, and the southern side altar to Saint Dimitri of Rostov. The date marks a specific event in the church’s history, not an annual festival for visitors.
A Community Museum with Its Own Focus
The community museum “Kladovaya pamyati” is also located in Shcherbinino. It began operating in 2021, and its exhibition is dedicated to two historical periods. The church and the museum thus offer different perspectives on the town’s past: one presents the long history of a monastery site and a church building, while the other centers on an exhibition focused on two periods.
Nature and Culture in Tver Oblast
Those looking beyond Shcherbinino to Tver Oblast will also find opportunities to explore nature. The Central Forest State Nature Biosphere Reserve offers an excursion to the “Staroselskiy mokh” raised bog; visitors use their own vehicle for this excursion. The “Boloto Staroselskiy mokh” ecological trail leads through a raised bog with wide, open areas entirely covered in moss and unusual plants. Tver Oblast therefore offers different ways to experience nature: an excursion in your own vehicle or a trail whose landscape centers on the raised bog itself.
Another hiking option in Tver Oblast leads to the “Barsuchikha” cordon. The hike can be taken as a day trip or with an overnight stay in a forest hut; along the way, visitors see southern taiga forest and a raised bog. The choice between a day hike and an overnight stay gives the trip a different timeframe from a visit to a single nature trail. Those primarily looking to experience forests and bogs will find a concrete way to plan their stay in the region here.
The cultural history of Tver Oblast also extends beyond Shcherbinino. In Torzhok, the Verkhneye gorodishche is located in the historic center; it is an archaeological monument of federal significance and a tourist attraction. The Novotorzhskiy Borisoglebskiy Monastery is also located there. Founded in 1038, it is one of Russia’s oldest Orthodox monasteries. The “Blin s Pripyokom” and “Kuzminki v Torzhke” festivals are held annually in the Novotorzhskiy Kremlin. Church and monastery history, archaeological heritage, festivals, and bog landscapes thus offer different themes to explore when planning a trip in Tver Oblast.
